B. His name was Yuri Gagarin, and he was a Soviet military pilot who had competed to become a cosmonaut. He was also the first human to orbit the Earth (not John Glenn, though many believe so). The first American to fly into space some time later was Allan Sheppard, who spent all of about fifteen minutes in space and never went into orbit.
