I'd like to know more about black holes, stars, systems... the whole organization of everything, the way it all works. I've been so curious, and your answers can give me starting points to research the basics. I am interested in reading the theories of Einstein and Stephen Hawking, but if I don't start at the beginning, I'll never undersand what I'm reading! :-)

This is supposed to be one of the most spectacular meteor showers, but there was so much fog where I live I wasn't able to watch it. Maybe tonight I can see the tail end of it. Hopefully its clear here.

Suppose there were 100 other civilizations in our Galaxy. If they are spread randomly within the Galaxy's volume, about how far away would the nearest one be? State your assumptions to get partial credit, at least, for your answer. Hint: supppose that 1% of the stars in the Galaxy had a civilization, so that there would be about 1 billion civilizations in the whole Galaxy. How far would the nearest one be, on average? You would have to find out to what distance to look such that the volume searched would contain about 100 stars.
