Without having access to space, what evidence can be provided that the earth is round.

I believe the earth is round but i need proof for a project. Without having ANYONE visit space including any pictures from space. I need evidence that you can observe from the earth itself.

An eclipse of the moon. You can see the round shadow.

The usual proof that the surface is curved is the way a ship disappears over the horizon at sea. It seems to sink lower and lower as to goes away, until at last you can only see the top of the mast before it too sinks out of site. That does not prove the entire Earth is round, but it proves that the area around you is curved. If Earth was flat it would not seem to sink as it went away, it would just get smaller and more obscure in the haze.

Another proof is the position of the North star in the sky as seen from different places. It can never be seen from anywhere south of the equator. At the equator it is always on the horizon. At the north pole, it is always directly overhead. At any place between the equator and the north pole it is at an angle above the horizon that equals your latitude. Such things are only possible on a spherical Earth.

Finally, and both most obvious and most overlooked proof, is that nobody can find an edge. You can travel all over the place for your whole life and never find an edge to the world. No matter where you go, it looks like an endless flat place (ignoring mountains and canyons), with the only real difference being where you see (or fail to see) the north star.

The earth has gravity, you are able to degree the anomalies your self. there is extra gravity on the poles, a lot less on the equator because it truly is spinning the quickest there, so there's a centrifugal result. this isn't achievable on a flat earth, because the entire flat earth will be transferring on an same velocity by area. and also you may see ships fall below the sea over the horizon with out the human beings drowning...and purely call a pal in another u . s ., the solar will be at a unique top contained in the sky than it truly is for you! Or when you're somewhat no longer confident, watch for the subsequent lunar eclipse. The earth's shadow on the moon is round.

Well joseph, we DO have access to space and can see that the earth is round...what other proof do you need? Or do you think the space program does not really exist and that it is all hoax...But I guess that since you can continue in one direction in a strait line and end up at the same point would also be a good indication that its round...

The concept of a spherical Earth was espoused by Pythagoras apparently on aesthetic grounds, as he also held all other celestial bodies to be spherical. It replaced widespread belief in a flat Earth: In early Mesopotamian thought the world was portrayed as a flat disk floating in the ocean, and this forms the premise for early Greek maps like those of Anaximander and Hecataeus. Other speculations as to the shape of Earth include a seven-layered ziggurat or cosmic mountain, alluded to in the Avesta and ancient Persian writings (see seven climes). In fact, the Earth is reasonably well-approximated by an oblate spheroid.

the bible, in Isa. 40:22: 22 There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, the One who is stretching out the heavens just as a fine gauze, who spreads them out like a tent in which to dwell. "the circle" it didnt same flat.. so who ever said that the earth was round, he didnt invent it. he read the bible. and then in JOb 26:7 He is stretching out the north over the empty place,
Hanging the earth upon nothing;. So then there Jehova let us know that the eart was in an empty space known as "space" and that i wasnt haging on nothing. and we know that now.

Another possibility is to buy a good pair of walking shoes and walk a straight line (of coruse part of the trip will be over water, but you must keep to that straight line). You will eventually land up back at your front door.

Bon voyage!

well, if you are leaving, say, the eiffel tower, and walk away in a straight line, the tower would sink into the distant horizon behind you as opposed to dropping off (or you falling off!). this only occurs on a curved surface. and, if you kept walking in that line, and could walk on water as well, you would eventually see the tower rise before you as you approached it from the opposite direction, having made a complete trip around the world.
