because Earth won't stay as it now. The sun pulling the earth to him, so one day our planet will crash into it. Or a big meteorite will "land" on earth. So if you only stay on Earth soon or later will disappear. I think Sir Hawking meant something like that

Man has made many achievements which has helped us in the better understanding of the world aroud us. Science and technology has been leaping into the future and has enabled man to break all the frontiers.
The last and final frontier for man is space. We have barely brushed through our Solar System and know very little. We haven't even answered one of the most basic questions that has baffled many scientists across the world, "Is there life out there in space? Is there another planet like ours?" To answer these basic questions a lot of work has to be done.
And also, in the future planet Earth will not be able to hold our population and we will be forced to explore the possibility of utilising the mineral rich planets of the other planets present in the Solar System. NASA has already taken the first step by announcing plans to set up a base on the moon by 2028.
These are just few of the reasons why people need to go to space.
So my friend "Space is the final frontier, to seek out new lands and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before". Sounds familiar??

No. the reason in the back of the gap race interior the 50's and 60's replaced into merely national delight. We had merely come out of WWII and found that we had a clean mortal enemy - u.s.. We had to coach that we've been extra beneficial than the Soviets by employing attending to the moon first. It replaced right into a thrown-mutually element, for each and all of the engineering marvels that got here out of it (and each and all of the spin-offs as properly: velcro for one), and that's incredible that we did no longer lose extra people to those missions than we did.

i think the only reason for having people in space is for operating a science laboratory in microgravity.
All other reasons seem to be just a question of prestige.
The scientific outcome of being on another planet is quite high, hence its too expensive to actually move people there.
Much of useful science can already be done by robots, without risking life. So yes.. whats the reason ? microgravity, as i said... being able to do perform experiments which require someone having a hand on it.
For exploring possible new territory on other planets ? Or that mankind shall prepare to leave earth ? thatfor ?
Excuse me ..is earth that much in danger that there is a need to leave it ?
It's too early .. we've not yet managed to destroy our own planet. Maybe i sound stupid, but those billions being spent for human spaceflight to other planets are missing for making this planet a better place, thats my opinion.
If Hawking ever said that i bet he did so meaning exploring the universe in general, not meaning actually people in space.
The deserved outcome of such science is a better understanding of physics in general, and that resulting in new and better technologies making us more capable preventing us from destroying our own planet. And this what i think is urgent.

According to two of my Astronomy teachers, humans have no reason to go to space other than to say that they did. Robots, like the Mars Rover, can do all the work and more than humans can ever do. And initially, for the U.S. to compete with the Russians and beat them for the first to "land on the moon". LOL, did anyone see Buzz Aldrin punch out that guy that accused him of the moon landing being fake? Old astronaut punching out some young guy, ha! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQKxAqpjroo

As the human species increases its' medical knowledge people will live longer. As the human species evolves, war may become a thing of the past. This will increase population, and stretch our food resources to the limit. We must someday achieve the technological level of "Star Trek". In a world of 6 billion people are starving, what about a world of 60 billion.

This Planet that we are on can only maintain so many people.
The way that everyone keeps multiplying before to long there will not be anywhere else for us to go. The seas will be full, the land will also be full, there will be no room to even grow enough food.
So instead of migrating to England Space is left for us to over populate and destroy.

Humankind is filled with the brightest individual specimens on the planet. but as a species we are liable to kill each other with every other word that comes out of our mouths.
We need to get off this rock with as many different cultures as possible but a completely EQUAL number of each one to begin with.
If we do not very soon begin to colonize the outer planets and establish a "community of humanity in space"..... we risk having one narrow-minded fanatic with a bio-weapon exterminate the whole race just because he's mad about McDonald's removing meat flavored cooking oil on his french fries.

Human beings are the only animal which has the ability to prevent its own extinction. We can do that by populating other planets. We know it is only a matter of time before another world killing disaster strike earth as it has done in the past.

People have always wanted to explore. Like when you go on holiday - great fun.
Most of this planet has been explored now, and as we have the technology now to go to other places, we will explore there now.
By doing all these things, we learn more about technology, health, etc.
Look at all the things that were found by explorers before!
Who knows what we might find on other planets?
