4. Suppose X and Y be independent normal random variables, with distributions N(μ, sigm) = N(5, 3) and N(2, 4) respectively. Let W = X + 2Y + 1.
Compute
(a) E(W); (b) V (W); (c) Prob(W < 0) (d) Cov(X,W) .
5. Suppose that X and Y are rv’s which only assume the values 0 and 1. Suppose that the joint pmf p(x, y) satisfies p(0, 0) = .3, p(0, 1) = .4, p(1, 0) = .2.
(a) What is p(1, 1)?
(b) Compute E(2X − Y ).
(c) Are X and Y independent?
(d) Compute the conditional pmf pX(x).
6. Suppose that the number of phone calls Tara receives in the evening is a Poisson process with rate 2 per hour, and the number of calls I receive is an independent Poisson process with rate 0.1 per hour.
(a) At 6 p.m., Tara returns home and happily waits for her next
phone call. What is the probability that she will get a call before 7:30 pm?
(b) What is the probability that at least one of us receives at least one phone call between 6 and 7:30 pm?

I
Turn an open bottle upside-down for a draining experience... or maybe not.

Ingredients:

-Water (Do Not use a carbonated beverage like soda for this trick.)

- Empty glass drink bottle (any kind will work)

- Paper napkin or any small piece of paper

The Recipe:

1) After you finish emptying a glass bottle, refill it to the brim with water. Fill it so high that you get a little water bulging at the top of the bottle.

2) Tear-off or find a piece of paper that is a little bigger than the mouth of the bottle.

3) Place the paper over the mouth of the bottle.

4) Lightly tap the paper on top of the bottle to make sure it gets wet and makes a good seal with the bottle's glass lip.

when you flip it over the water doesnt drip.

I think I lknow the answer to this one but I'd like some feed back. The question reads as followed: Suppose at the kickoff of a football game, the kick return man catches the ball at the left side of the goal line and runs for a TD diagonally across the field. How many yards did he run? (The field is 100 yards long and 160 feet wide.)

Well just from playing the sport I know that 40 yards = 160 feet. When I worked the problem I got 120 yards ran by the return man.
