Go to the "Search for questions" box (at the top of this page), and type "moon mars august". You will then see just how many other people on Yahoo!Answers have also fallen for this Mars hoax.
But to answer your question, Mars will be about 109 million miles from earth on August 28. That's not particularly close. If you wait till December, it'll be only about 56 million miles away.
I found this out by going to "www.heavens-above.com", and clicking the "solar system chart" link.

BEWARE THE MARS HOAX: It's August, which means it's time for the annual Mars Hoax. An email is going around claiming that Mars will approach Earth on August 27th; the encounter will be so close, the email states, that Mars will rival the full Moon in size and brightness. (Imagine the tides!) Don't believe it. The Mars Hoax email first appeared in 2003. On August 27th of that year, Mars really did come historically close to Earth. But the email's claim that Mars would rival the Moon was grossly exaggerated. Every August since 2003, the email has staged a revival.

On August 27 Mars will be about 109 million miles from Earth. It'll look like a modestly bright reddish point of light.

Mars will be about 175 million km from Earth on August 27, 2007. It will come as close as about 88 million km when it reaches opposition around Christmas 2007. This is nowehere near as close as it was on August 27, 2003 when it was about 56 million km from the Earth.

Using Celestia, I found Mars to be about 1.17 AU from Earth on that day. Fast forwarding until the distance started getting greater again, I found that it gets about as close as .59au (roughly 49% closer) by December 29.
1AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun, FYI.

35 million miles.
Mars will never be more than a bright pinpoint star in the sky.
That whole "Mars will be close enough to look like the moon" thing is a hoax, completely wrong and completely impossible.
