(Enrico Fermi, scientist,1901-1954)
"a fermi question is answered by making reasonable assumptions, not necessarily relying upon definate knowledge for an exact answer".
"questions that can be answered quantitively by rough approximations, inspired guesses and statistical estimates from very little data".
"Fermi revelled in posing unexpected questions (as a scientist) on aspects of the natural world, and then figuring out thier answers. Some classic Fermi questions ...(particularly relevant to Yhoo?) ..How many atoms could be reasonably claimed to belong to the jurisdiction of the USA".
"You can find many Fermi-type questions on the internet".

An electron of mass 9.11×10−31 kg leaves one end of a TV picture tube with zero initial speed and travels in a straight line to the accelerating grid, which is a distance 1.55 cm away. It reaches the grid with a speed of 3.90×106 m/s. The accelerating force is constant. Find the acceleration, the time to reach the grid, find the net force. (You can ignore the gravitational force on the electron).

I already know the solution, (1 - 1/(n+1)) so if you could explain how this is found it would be appreciated. I see this as having some harmonic series in it.

A lot of money has been going missing from my house. At first I suspected the stripper I am dating but after a heartfelt talk with her about my concerns I am satisfied that she is innocent.

The other day I saw my best friend Larry going through my wallet as I awoke from a nap. I couldn't believe my eyes! I accused him of being the theif...

Larry told me that he was just doing an 'inspection' to help me out. He showed me my wallet, which was full of sawdust. He said that I had a definate infestation of French Termites, which are known for their love of printed money.

Well...I have never heard of such a thing.

Is Larry on the level or is he stealing from me to support his 2 bottle a night drinking habit?
