It is a Pavlovian response (like Pavlov's dogs that salivated when they heard the bell that had been associated with food during conditioning). He won a Nobel Prize for that.

Our brain (the organ) cannot tell the difference between an imagined event (in the mind) and the "real" one.
The chemical changes in the body when we get angry or turned on by someone who is nowhere around are the same process at work.
There is currently some very intriguing research involving brain scans of Tibetan Buddhist monks while they are meditating.
Hmmmmm.

It's a kind of a reflex. Like if you hold a sheet of Plexiglass in fromt of you, and someone throws a ball at it, you flinch, even though you know that you are protected. Reptilian brain and all that. So at first you don't know the difference between the image of food and real food.

Its a brain trigger function, your mouth begins to produce saliva to help digest food, it starts the second it gets the message from the brain that a certain food is pleasing and palatable.

Your mind makes you hungry, when you are hungry you are usually bound to salivate. Its as simple as that! I like your avater, it looks like Billy Idol, Billy Idol rules! Glad I could be of assistance!
