I have heard different stories and now I am confused

People are getting away with rape and murder. Foreigners are claiming millions apon millions in benefits. Our justice system, schooling system and NHS is poor. Our army has been neglected and shrunk. There isn't any pride for the country. Why is it all going so wrong? Immigration? An unenthusiastic less spirited government?

How low can the Republicans go?

Come hell or high water-ran the conventional wisdom-Republicans could rely on two issues to win elections: the war on terror and values. Then came Mark Foley. The drip-drip-drip of scandal surrounding the former Congressman from Florida, which became a deluge this week, now threatens to sink Republican hopes of keeping control of Congress, says the NEWSWEEK poll out today.

And that was the good news for the GOP. More worrisome still, the Foley fiasco is jeopardizing the party’s monopoly on faith and power. For the first time since 2001, the NEWSWEEK poll shows that more Americans trust the Democrats than the GOP on moral values and the war on terror. Fully 53 percent of Americans want the Democrats to win control of Congress next month, including 10 percent of Republicans, compared to just 35 percent who want the GOP to retain power. If the election were held today, 51 percent of likely voters would vote for the Democrat in their district versus 39 percent who would vote for the Republican. And while the race is closer among male voters (46 percent for the Democrats vs. 42 percent for the Republicans), the Democrats lead among women voters 56 to 34 percent.

UNITED NATIONS — The U.S. responded Monday to North Korea's claim of a successful first test of a nuclear weapon by calling on the United Nations Security Council to enact wide-ranging sanctions, including a trade ban on military and luxury items, the power to inspect all cargo entering or leaving the country, and freezing assets connected with its weapons programs.

The strongly worded request came as U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told the Security Council that Washington would view any North Korean aggression against South Korea or Japan as an attack on the United States, U.N. diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed. The United States has defense agreements with Tokyo and Seoul, and thousands of U.S. troops are stationed in both countries.

Bolton echoed the stern warning delivered earlier in the day by President Bush, who called North Korea's nuclear test "unacceptable" and 'provocative," and warned the regime of Kim Jung Il that the U.S. would honor its commitments to protect its Asian allies commitments," Bush said during a brief White House appearance.

The president said North Korea was "one of the world's leading proliferators" of weapons technology, including transfers to Iran and Syria.

Will someone help me find articles on the use of connotation and denotation,

for example, the Crusade word used by Bush, I believe, and how it offended people.
Or a newspaper says a "riot" while that may offend several people.

Kind of a journalistic thing.

Get the idea?

As many as possible please. Articles, blogs, examples. Perferably articles.

Thanks! a lot.

Why is it that Republicans hiss and moan about Social Security, and they even want to do away with it, but when they get old enough to collect the first thing they do is run down to the Social Security Office for their government hand-out?

Bush's approval drops to all-time low

October 8, 2006 - 6:20PM

US President George Bush's approval rating has declined to an all-time low of 33 per cent this month, down from 36 per cent in August, according to Newsweek's latest poll.

The US weekly magazine said its fresh poll, taken on Thursday and Friday, shows 67 per cent of Americans are not satisfied with the direction of the country, compared with 25 per cent who are.

The poll came as Bush and his fellow Republicans were gripped by military and moral quagmires including the Iraq war and a sex scandal involving former Florida Republican congressman Mark Foley.

For the first time in the Newsweek poll, a majority of Americans believe the Bush administration misled the American public in building its case for the Iraq war by a margin of 58 per cent to 36 per cent who think it did not.

The poll also found that Americans are pessimistic about the ongoing hostilities in Iraq, with 64 per cent believing the United States is losing ground there, 66 per cent saying the war has not made the United States safer from terrorism, and 53 per cent believing it was a mistake to go to war at all.

We all know that America is one of the richest-most powerful nation on earth... but America's also one of the most hated nation on earth, too. Oww... such an irony...Many of our Veterans are homeless and hungry with little or no hope. Crime all over the United States. Black Veterans getting pulled over in white areas for DWB. ( Driving while Black ) Drugs all over the place. Car jackings, Police beatings over nothing ( Mt Clemens Police beat people for fun....At least 6 did get fired ) I am ashamed to be an American.
