I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!! (I guess I'm not getting best answer on this question. :) For the poster of this question... There are exits to this country to the North, South, East, and West. I recommend you use one immediately.
I am dissatisified with how our government is being run currently and in recent history however I am not ashamed to be an American. Not even close. You know we are not perfect, but we're better than 90% of the countries out there. So if you're so ashamed MOVE!!!! George Bush has 40 illegal aliens ready to take your place.

Obviously you wanted to get a rise from people and clearly you did. That said, in the possible chance you are half serious, let me respond to your statements.
America (government leaders) does not always react in the best possible way, but she does make her statements and feelings known. She doesn't sit back as so many other nations when we were hurting, and not come to someone's aid.
I'm not a gambling woman, but would bet you my life that veterans would emphatically disagree with you - my two brothers do and they've been all over the world as military officers. To say that you're ashamed of America is to say our military men and women who fight for us are a waste. You don't care about them, much less me, my family, my neighbors and so on.
I've always been the person who offers solutions when citing disagreements and problems. You've offered none here. Just how much do you care?
There is no utopia in the world. America is NOT perfect and never will be. Face it. But there is absolutely no where else in this world where I'd rather be, live, see my family and friends and know that as best we can, Americans care about one another. We show that in ways impossible to measure such as the aftermath of 9/11 ... would you run into a burning, toppling building to save other people's lives at the risk of your own?
I mean no disrespect to you and I'd fight for your right to voice your opinion, much as you've done here. However, realize that I too would fight for my right (and the rights of others) to tell you loudly how very wrong we believe you are.
In a family, you're not ashamed of your other siblings or family members because they've done something(s) wrong. You still love them - and try to help them grow and realize where their correct path should be.
I certainly agree we Americans have so many ills to try to cure ... but we're trying, the majority of us. And there is hope ... and where there is hope, my friend, be not ashamed!

Not at all. I served my nation proudly. I have worked hard for what I have, and nobody can take it away. As Americans, we are hated for different reasons by different people. You'll be surprised how uneducated and prejudiced some of those reasons are, though hate is a bad thing, and to quote The Beatles: "If you want money for people with minds that hate, all I can tell you is buddy, you have to wait." I've seen people die for stupid stuff. And, conversely, I've seen them die for the most noble causes in the world. Some wore our uniforms, others wore the uniform of another country.
Is war good? No.
Is lying to people, and using their schools and churches for your own campaign of hate and death? No.
Is killing your own nation's populace, because they want a voice to be heard with? No.
Is telling lies about another nation's head, or people, just to make yourself look good, and also use a religion to do so, in the same breath? No.
If you look you will find bad stuff. It's easy. The road to evil is broad, smoothe, and easily traveled.
Finding the good in the world isn't hard either. But, the road of goodness is narrow, and difficult.
Your feelings are yours, and I can't and won't take that from you. That would be wrong. I'm sad that you think living in this great nation is such a hardship. But, I am happy to love it, and to be able to live here. Sometimes it all depends upon our perspectives, as to how we see the world.
And, if you want to make a change, just do it. It isn't hard, once you start. Wallowing in the mud only makes you dirty, but sprinting down the road takes you places.

At the moment, yes, I am ashamed to be an American. What the President and his inept administration did in Iraq is against almost every rule in international law. Not only that, he has started a war against a non-state actor (terrorists) but has attacked a country. Can someone PLEASE explain THAT to me!? Iraq now is a more dangerous country to live in now than before. The US government has unilaterally pulled out of a legal contract, the Kyoto Protocol that was supposed to help the environment by reversing some of the effects of global warming. Most skeletons of social safety nets have been yanked from under us hurting only the most destitute in this country...Yes, right now I am ashamed to be an American but I still understand and do not take for granted all the rights that are given to me and will therefore vote in every election ever!

We have always been a hated nation because of our freedoms. It is no reason to be ashamed. Those things that you listed aren't because it is America... they don't happen in all areas of the country, and they certainly don't represent every American. I think one of the reason we feel so much hate recently is because it is coming from within our country. People that are ashamed to be American tend to spread that hate. If we were all as proud to be American as we were directly after 9/11, when everyone was standing up for our nation, we wouldn't be feeling so much hate from each other. It makes me sad that people are ashamed to be American.

Yeah and how about all the good we do? What about all the money we send to nations who hate us? If you are so ashamed to be an American then GET OUT!!! Go become a Candian or Mexican or something else. We don't need your kind. Now I am of teh attitude if you dont' love this country then fix it, if you don't like it or are ashamed then GET OUT. Yeah we have our problems and people should try to fix them. Sitting on here bitching doesn't do a thing.

America is a huge supercontinent with a lot going on in it.
The United States of America are a big country with a lot going on in THEM!
Anyone who can call him/herself a (U.S.) American without feeling deeply proud and ashamed at the same time, does not deserve to call him/herself an American!

I am proud to be an American...where at least i know i'm free...lol...well i am...i'm just not so proud of the crime and racism that still occurs in this day and age...but that just happens in any society...ppl who live in America however are fortunate to have things like the most modern technology to make our society seem like our very own utopia...but one more thing...why are some ppl so quick to state the bad things and never think about the good?...anyways if your so ashamed you should leave...its our world...you just live in it...

Not at all. We're not perfect, but I still would rather be an American than a citizen of any other country.
Oh, BTW, if you're so worried about "drugs all over the place," The Netherlands and Jamaica have it much worse than we do.
