An Englishman, Frenchman, Mexican, and Texan were flying across country on a small plane when the pilot comes on the loud speaker and says " We're having mechanical problems and the only way we can make it to the next airport is for 3 of you to open the door and jump, at least one of you can survive" The four open the door and look out below. The Englishman takes a deep breath and hollers "God Save The Queen" and jumps. The Frenchman gets really inspired and hollers "Viva La France" and he also jumps. This really pumps up the Texan so he hollers "Remember the Alamo" and he grabs the Mexican and throws him out of the plane.

Iraq is falling apart, and 20,000 additional troops can’t put it back together again.

In October, a record number of Iraqis—3,709—were killed. With a vicious cycle of sectarian violence on top of the insurgency, the idea that 20,000 more troops can do much of anything is deluded. Iraq is a lost cause.

The following comes from a transcript of a speech by Joseph Nye, the Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

(summarized due to space)
"..power is the ability to influence others to get what you want. And you do that three ways.
1. You can do it with threats or sticks.
2. You can do it with payments or bribes.
3. You can do it with attraction or co-option. This is soft power. And your soft power, or attractiveness, grows out of three things.

1. The way you frame your policies, appealing to the interests of others
2. grows out of your popular culture
3. grows out of your values and ideals"

This is a long article but worth reading if you want to learn about how our government uses 'soft power' to get what it wants and also how the Bush admin has pretty much dissolved all our soft power(our appeal and how ppl hate us now) in the world today... even in allied countries.

I see movies on tv all the time that have bad words censored, like "Next Friday", but show other scenes that could be viewed as just as bad as a profane word (such as a fight where one guy has blood on his face in the movie "Next Friday") . I want to know how this happens. And how , whoever censors these movies, do they get around the first amendment? Because I just heard of "clean flicks" , a company who censors movies so they are fit for "the whole family" , being shut down for censoring people's movies. What are the laws behind these situations? I have to do a speech on media censorship, and want to make sure I know about all the major laws and arguements that can be brought up in this subject.

The goal of terrorists is to change the social order. The ONLY way to "shake things up" and change a society is to do outrageous things in public - either through peaceful protests or violence. Ghandi and hippies were sucessfull with peace, and now the Al Queda is sucessfull with violence. For the measly price of a couple of million dollars (or less), Al Queda has caused the USA to spend hundreds of billions , The terrorists have succeeded in changing society - making it more paranoid and less free. The terrorists have succeeded in making the USA MORE of a paria state - with the entire world hating US (not "them"). They have succeeded in bogging us down in a questionable war (although parallels to vietnam are unwarranted, as we lost at LEAST 1600 soldiers a MONTH in vietnam). I'm sure that members of Al Queda KNEW that many would be caught - since its hard to hide from someone with unlimited resources - but to wreak so much havoc on your enemy, it is a small price to pay.
