I had been using feminine hygiene wipes on my guinea pig to make his coat look nicer, but then I realized it was taking out the natural oils or something because whenever I cleaned his cage and got him out, his back was all wet and clumpy. I think the wetness and clumpiness had something to do with the wipes I'd been using. Now I'm using a washcloth with water on it to clean him. Is there a special brand of small animal shampoo or something I should use? I want his skin and hair to be healthy and fluffy again. Thank you.

I've got two hamsters, both Syrian. When I first got them, I put them into one cage, after a while one became more dominant over living space and eventually they started to fight. I bought an extra cage and seperated them.

Now it's been about a year since I've had them, and for the past few weeks (maybe a month now), they both have picked up with chewing on their cages (one more than the other). Their caged are not the same size, one is larger than the other, upon certain reasons of fear and weight.

The one in the smaller cage (named Pocket), she chews on her cage consintly, I'm scared maybe it's too small for her, but she is a small hamster. I've tried many chew toys, she has a wheel and tubes to play in, her teeth are in fine shape and she gets heapings of food & water. She doesn't get out that often to run in her ball, but I've tried to get her out as much as I can.

Am I missing something? How can I get her to stop?!?

I want a pet that will fit my apt room, and I find rat to be suitable. I'm also arachnophobic, and I hate spider a lot. I want to train my going-to-be pet rat to kill spider (doesn't have to eat them; just kill and throw away at toilet). The thing is, I imagine spider's size to rat is like cat's to us human, so if my rat is bitten, its poison might be deadly, is it? Is this "training" possible? How?

I'm considering to get a pet hamster but I work six days a week, would it be possible for me to have enough time to care for it and how should I care for it? If I can't care for one due to time do you have any other pet suggestions, (no pet rocks please I'm not retarded)

i dont have anything on my hands, and what are some signs of affection do rats show toward their owners? kind of like when a dog sits on their owner's lap, that sort of deal. and how can i get my rat to just chill out on my hand or lap. i hate just keeping her in the cage or in the rat ball, but she's a little too jumpy to just keep out.

my two females have been very aggressive towards one another. for several weeks they have thrashed through the bars to get at one another and once they had a really bad fight and there was a lot of blood. one of them was pregnant and right after she had the babies the violence died down. i noticed that the young mother accepted the older female gently and they groomed one another peacefully. i thought everything was very idyllic until i saw the older female with pieces of baby in her mouth and blood all over her whiskers and hands. she ate one of the babies. i can understand why the older female did what she did but why did the younger female's behaviour change so much?

im almost positive my dwarf hamster has diabetes. So, im going to change her diet, and do her water bottle half water, half flavorless pedialites, but she also lives with another dwarf hamster who doesnt have diabetes, do you think i should still switch the diet and water, or will it affect the healthy hamster negatively

My rat Pinkie is making a weird sound; it is coming from her nose. It sounds kind of like she has a stuffy nose. Can this lead to anything bad??? Or does she just have a cold. She started to make the sound this morning. :( :)

My guinea pig Mocha died unexpectedly today. He had started coughing and I didn't think much of it around 3pm when I got home at 6pm I found him in his hut with blood on the floor. My other guinea pig Cinnamon was making an awful shrieking sound--like he was crying.

What could have caused this death? He had all good food, water non-wood bedding fresh veggies every day. What happened.

And should I replace Mocha, and if so how soon?
I feel empty without my Mocha and I need sound advice.

I'm getting a job soon (I'm 17) and after I save up some money for more important things I was hoping to buy a pet rat or maybe a hamster. I've had pet rats before when I was younger so I wanted to do that again (a hamster would be ok too). The thing is my mom thinks I wont take care of it on my own (even though I've proven I can by owning other pets in the past) so I want to pay for everything but I don't know how much it will cost a month, or a week. I know of all the items I'll be needing to get started but how much do you guys spend on the bedding and food for your rodents a month, or every two months, how ever often?

I already own some hermit crabs and I'm very dedicated to them. I know that I can handle the responsibility and care so don't worry about that I've even done research on top of already owning some rats and Guinea pigs in the past.

My Guinea pig is seriously sick and my mom will not take her to the vet. I am 13 so I can't. I have begged her. I really want to help my piggy. He is very young and I don't want him to die! He is not eating much and he has gotten very skinny. He is also hopping/limping. I have seen that these are signs of being seriously ill. I know that they get sick very easily and their health deteriorates very quickly. I am upset. What should I do!

We just aquired a rodent pet from a co-worker who says it's a gerbil. But he's pretty chubby, black & white, with a stubby tail. His ears stick upand he keeps food in his cheeks. I say he's a hamster, my fiance says gerbil.

They're so similiar it's hard to tell the difference...anything else I should look for to determine what it is?
