If you adopt hamsters from your local animal shelter or humane society, they are usually less expensive than the ones at stores and SOMETIMES are more used to human contact. You will probably only want to get 1, unless you like 2 that are being adopted together (my husband and I just adopted 2 as a pair with the understanding that one day they might have to be separated because of fighting- they are dwarf hamsters), but that means twice as much food, twice as much space in the cage, etc.
You are going to want to get a cage that is easy to clean (we bought a wire cage with a flat bottom and a flat second story, which is not as fun and colorful as other cages, but easier to clean and we can see the hamsters very well). Cages can run from 20 dollars to upwards of 50 dollars. Go to your local pet store and see what they reccomend. You'll need bedding and that can run you about $10 a packet of bedding (more for more volume, but you won't need to buy it as often that way). A water bottle for the cage, which is about $5. My husband and I bought a rubbermaid tub at Target and filled it with bedding and toys for the hamsters, so that was a bit of money.
Basically, after the initial output of money (I would have about $50-$70) you are looking at $10-$20 a month for bedding, food, and toys. You also have to keep in mind that you might have to take the hamster to the vet if there is an emergency, and it's a good idea to take them to the vet once a year to get a checkup.
As for ways to make money, try babysitting, or helping around the house... or have a yard sale and get rid of things you don't want or need anymore. Don't sell things you still love, but books you don't want anymore, CDs, lamps, things like that that are easy to part with.
Hope this helps!

I bought my own hamster and I am 12. well if you want a REALLY good hamster it could cost bettwen $15 and $20 and I got a teddy bear hamster for $5. I got the cage with the wheel and a tunnel and a water thing for 20 and bedding is like 5 or 10 bucks and food is also 5 or 10 bucks. I had forty buckas and that worked out and then when I got more money I bought her some chewing toys because they have long teeth and those are about 5 bucks and you can find more info on http://www.petsmart.com/global/browse_category.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302023695&N=2023695&Ne=2&In=Small+Pet&TS=2%7CALL&bmUID=1183252473789

I had one to. I bought all those fun tubes where they run through, but what a work trying to keep it clean. I had the clean is every two days or the smell of the urine was unbearable. I had two Hamsters and I toughed they where both boys, wrong! I had six hamsters with in the first month. Some where so aggressive, that two where killed. I found people to take the other babies, and that one of my hamster got out, and I never found it. The other hamster got sick and died.
I don't like hamsters any more.
Sorry but if I where you, get a Gold fish.

Hamsters only cost about 20-30 dollars so they're not that much.

Go to this website and read everything you need to get for it. Then go to the pet store and see how much the stuff costs. Then you'll know how much to save for.
