yes but in tanks there's not enough air ventilation.

Mariah, who posted above me is correct. There is plenty of air.

You clearly don't know anything about gerbils so you should read up on them. They are desert animals and live in underground tunnels and eat insects in their natural habitat.

A wire cage is bad for several reasons. The cages are less sanitary. Gerbils have a tendency to gnaw on the bars and get bacterial infections on their noses. They are also prone to respiratory infections and should be kept away from drafts and out of open air containers.

An aquarium tank is the best container for your gerbil. While they make wire lids for the tanks and gerbils can jump, I've never really needed to use a lid. Even if I did, my gerbils would still be able to breathe.

Already hyper and curious, gerbils don't do well in wire cages because there is no closed area for them to hide. It makes them anxious.

All small animals need lots of hiding places. Tanks let them back into a corner to eat a seed without fear that someone or something will steal it from them. That's how they think.

Get a ten or twenty gallon glass aquarium from the fish dept. Then get a screen top from the reptile dept. This is the best option. Wire cages get messy b/c gerbils are energetic burrowers and will kick the bedding out of the sides. Plastic cages have poor ventilation and are too easy for gerbils to chew through. Hope this helps!

trust me. there is enough ventilation in a glass tank cage. i have had multiple sets of gerbils for over half my life (always two at a time), and they have all lived in a glass tank cage. all the my gerbils also lived over 3 years, the one up to 5! just make sure you get a wire mesh top, and if the room you are putting them in is hot and has no window for summer weather, you have a fan in the room. that's ventilation enough for gerbils, which live naturally in the desert. hope this helped!

I think gerbils do best in a large tank. They love to dig and burrow, so a thick layer of carefresh or aspen would be fun for them.
