I got this from a website, can't remember the URL:

From: Colin Patterson
Author, Pet Rats: How to Easily Train and Care For Your Ratties...To Have a Happy Life Together

Dear Friend,
What first got me so interested in pet rats almost 3 decades ago was their amazing antics. How could so much personality be balled up in such a small animal?
How could they -- unlike a lot of other small animals -- be so genuinely caring? And have such a strong gleam of intelligence in their eyes? And make me laugh for hours watching them play?
When I first went to my friend's house one day in 1978 to meet his pet rat, I wasn't so sure, since I had preconceived notions about rats.
But then when his rattie grabbed my pant leg with his little paws, my heart melted. Then my friend told me that his cute little rat wanted me to pick her up...
I lifted her up high, and the fuzzy little rat nuzzled her nose into my ear and...
I Became Hooked For Life

Hope this helps!

Some people cannot be convinced. Let her know rats are just as clean as cats, and can be litter box trained as well. Rats tend to get a bad reputation because they scavenge for food (instead of hunting and killing) and share illnesses with humans. I used to have rats, and they are great pets. They are very affectionate and are known to give kisses and snuggle. I did share a cold with my first rat, tho, and that was how I learned we can share sickness.
Find out if she likes any other rodents, like hamsters, gerbils and Guinea pigs. Show her the comparisons there.

If any of your friends have pet rats, maybe your mom could meet them & see for herself that they really can be very charming. A well-socialized rat doesn't bite, is friendly & playful & usually more interactive with people than hamsters are. I've lived with many companion rats, mice & hamsters among other animals & we currently have rats & mice who I affectionately refer to as "my little vermin." One of our rats actually *is* hairless but the rest if them are furry. I'll admit that it took a long time to get used to their tails but that was *my* problem, not theirs. If your mom does change her mind, it's better if you have 2 boys or 2 girls so they can play & hang out together. If they're well-cared for & their cages are kept clean, they're not 'filthy' @ all.

Even though I believe that rats are fine, and my son actually had some for pets when he was younger, your Mom has the right to say no to one in her house.

I was used to both mice and rats from working with them in statistical studies while I was in college.

I love most animals but would not have let my kids have snakes for pets, so everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

people who don't like rats have never known one
rats are amazing pets
they come when called
ride on your shoulder
smell nice - like grape soda or corn chips when their cage
is kept clean
are very loving and playful
cheap
go to some of the rat websites - fancy rats on the internet
and show your mom pics and some of the info
chances are once you actually get one you mom will come around when she gets to know him/her
this happens all the time :)

well, my family raises Mice and Rats, we sell them to pet shops and stuff, and the facts are that Mice and rats are cleaner than a human, they clean themselves constantly like a cat does. so as long as you keep its cage clean there is nothing dirty about a rat. They make really good pets:)

i have an idea for you. next time you are out and about with your mom.....take her into the pet store. and have her watch the rats. ask the salesperson if you can play with the rat. if your mom is a sport, she will see that rats are pretty cool. if your mom is totally uncool, well then, you are out of luck my friend.
