For example, I turn off the heater overnight. However, this morning it was 49 degrees. I keep the temp during the day at 68, so turning on the heater this morning, did that cost more than leaving it on overnight? (same thing about A/C... I wait until it gets unbearable about 78 degrees and THEN turn the A/C on. It never gets below 75 in the Summer...). So... basically, does it have to work harder if the temps are at such extreme highs/lows? I am trying to save some money if I can :) Thanks

I bought a house this summer and we have been doing a lot of work. Consequently we have just had a small bonfire and burnt most of the unwanted wood (we recycled anything of any use). I heard that ash is good for the soil but the links on this site talk about wood ash from a stove, this will have bits of plaster, wallpaper, the odd role plug and a few other inpurities in it as well as paper and leaves.

Can this be used in the same was as stove ash? Can it be mixed in? put in the composter or placed around plants? Or shall I just use it to fill the void under the steps we are building?

Thanks

I live in an apartment that is plagued by roaches. We have tried everything and everytime they move out, they move back a few weeks later. They are everywhere. We even have new breeds. They are white and have wings. The complex has sprayed and bombed. So have we. Sprays, traps, gels, boric acid... any suggestions besides moving?
Thanks

Those things drive me nuts. I really don't need to mow the lawn again for the winter, except for these pesky little fellas.

Best means both in terms of the heat it produces and cost efficiency.

When I moved into my apartment, the "garden" area outside my door was nothing but a spot of dirt with lint all over it. I decided to plant a chinese fan palm and a few colorful flowers in that area to make this place seem more like a home. I expected this palm to grow upward, but it appears to only be growing outward. One branch will soon be protruding into my walk-space. How can I trim this thing back without killing it or opening it up for disease? Bear in mind that it's November in the South. The weather is in constant flux. Any suggestions?

Does anyone like the newer version of Trading Spaces. Since this season started later, somewhere this month, they changed it up. No more $2000 Bonus room or three rooms, just one. No three days with one day to prep and shop-back to two days. Instead of the couples meeting the designers in their house, it's the designers who go to their house. Instead of two carpenters, it's back to one. What's your opinion on this?

i saw a show a few years ago that showed how they pour the stuff in the mold and put the colorin it too, when they come out they look just like the old rail fences you see in pictures. its very hard to tell they are not old. I want to find the company that makes them if they are still making them?

I'm going to the woods today to collect pine cones. I'd like to put them in a basket next to our fireplace. I've heard though that lots of insects nest in them. Is there any sure treatment as how to get rid of those unwanted house guests? Don't want hundreds of spiders crawling around in my living room. YIKES!
