if your ashes are clean they are very good for your garden. they add important nutrients to the soil and if you sprinkle around young veggie plants it will stop slugs and wire worms. if its winter i sprinkle in my drive way for traction and when people get stuck. it's a little messy but totally harmless.

well you can place them in a metal container for a few days make sure all coals are out and put in trash, or you can use the ash as a fertilizer for your lawn or other plants. If you do this be careful on how much you add to your plants, the salts in the ash can be very toxic to some plants if you apply too much. As for your lawn you should be o.k. just make sure you spread the ashes out, and not pile up in one spot. You might want to consider adding lime to your lawn in the early spring to help balance out the soil pH, the ash can make your soil a little acidic

I have spread fireplace ashes in my gardens for many years. Make sure they are evenly spread and work them into the soil in the spring.

Good luck with your ash disposal.
