This is usually a difficult job if the tile is well glued to the subfloor. It is common to scrape up the tile using a long handled scraper available in any home center.

Check out your local RentsAll for equipment that is made for the purpose of removing linoeum. They will teach you how to use it and it will be MUCH easier than doing it by hand. It's about the size of a large rug cleaner and has a vibrating wedge edge.

By hand, you would basically be using a blade type instrument and a hammer. Below is a website with more details and tips.

It is a LOT of work and would recommend a professional if at all possible or just leave it.

don't do it yourself , call in the experts or you will really screw up your house floor.
