Ok, I know basic plumbing techniques. however, I tried to heat the pipes and then put the soldering on it, but it seems like the soldering is not melting on the pipes, do I need flux? What is flux by the way? Now what I did was cut the bad piece away and I am going to home depot tomorrow to get a new joint piece. I want to do it the right way but I am a step away from buying a flexible tube and using 2 pipe clamps! I heated the original pipe to the right temp... I waited for the flame to go green, then I rubbed the soldering on it but it did not melt. What the hell am I doing wrong!!! Losing my mind! Any help?

Air conditioning tips, keeping cool for less

I live in a very old house which for some reason makes it very hard to install air conditioning (it has something to do with the thin walls) so any cool air we have comes from fans. This however does not do the best job of keeping the house cool. Is there anything I can do to keep my house cool when it's hot?

Someone gave me a 5000 gallon pool but it had some things missing. There is no type of strainer over where the water is pulled into the pump and it pulls leaves in and then the pump shuts down. I bought an aquabug to clean the bottom of the pool and it did not come with any type of strainer either. It just plugs straight in to the side of the pool and goes straight to the pump as well. HELP!!

I have drained the fuel and put fresh gas in and put in a new spark plug and air filter. The oil level is fine. It got rained on last fall, and sat all winter. We have not been able to start it this spring at all.

We have had problems with our refrigerator for a while.

The freezer didn't seem to be working properly. The ice cream turned "soupy". The meat in the refrigerator seemed to go bad.

The repair man is here now.

He said the computer chip for the defrosting system was broken.

He showed the accumulation of ice on the back of the freezer. He is using a hair dryer to melt it.

He showed me the computer chip. Said after 6 years anything is liable to happen, just like if a laptop had a problem.

He took out the computer chip and showed it to me. Said he's sending it in to the manufacturer.

The manufacturer sent his company to my house. It costs $65 for him to walk through the door. Plus, whatever repairs.

What questions should I ask? Is he telling the truth?

I have a canister vacuum, where a flexible hose goes from the sucking end to the rest of the vacuum. I was vacuuming up some bits of shredded insulation and now the hose is clogged in the middle. How can I unclog it?

The hose has angled attachments at both ends that prevent me from pushing a stick or rod into the hose.

A plumber's snake didn't work. It seemed to run into the blockage and stop, and I couldn't push it any farther.

Any other suggestions?

The primer bulb/ button will work to prime the mower and I can start it fine. Then the primer bulb will suck into the mower flat and kill the mower. I have checked the fuel line, air cleaner and choke to be sure they are clean and working. Any more ideas?

We are looking at a home to purchase (southeastern Wisconsin) and the basement walls have long, horizontal cracks which are probably the result of heavy clay soils and improper drainage towards the house over the years. Years ago I had a smaller home with a similar situation and I just dug it out by hand (whew!) and then had a mason friend knock out some uneven bricks and reset new ones. It cost me a case of beer at the time. I want to do it as in expensively as possible and not pay some basement contractor 15-20 grand. Any suggestions?

Ive already ripped out the carpet and the sub floors. I need a INDUSTRIAL smell remover. Perhaps something they use at a morgue. Any ideas would be appreciated. Also the feces has caused black mold under all the baseboards. Any ideas on that stuff as well would be appreciated. Financial stress makes it impossible to completely gut the house, so I'm looking for the elbow grease method of choice

I'm in NY how much would it cost to fix appx? Can I turn the pump on and off to use sparingly in the meantime?
