I have two customers with tankless heaters.
One with gas.
One with an electric one.

Randy is so happy with his gas tankless heater he put in his new home he built 3 years ago,---he's putting one in the new home he's building now.

The other one with the electric one, is always on the phone with the manufacturer. It has a lifetime warranty, and they help her and send her whatever she needs, but she constantly having problems with it.
She supplied it, and I installed it.
With it turning out to be a piece of junk, I'm glad I didn't supply it or I would have to honor a labor warranty on it.

Anyway, a top quality gas one that'll furnish about 8 gpm of hot water requires a 3/4' gas supply, and a 4" vent.

Therefore, if you are going to have it done, you better let them know before they pipe for a regular tank heater.

Many people swear by them. Some swear AT them. If you have hard water, I would not advise one. They will constantly be a problem with clogs. Make sure there is someone in your area that works on them. Many plumbers will install them but not do service work. They are more complicated to work on. As noted previously, decide before the utilities are installed to prevent extra cost for repiping.

I have one running on oil. It is just me and my wife. We have no problems and couldnt be happier. I can take a shower and run the laundry, or the dishwasher....not all 3. I have had company at teh house and taken 5 showers in a row with no complaints. There are bosster tanks that can be added on if needed.

To summarize, depending on the size of your family, I think they are the way to go.

My sister-in-law had a gas unit installed in her house and loves it. She said that her and her son can each use a shower at the same time with adequate water for both showers. It seems to me that hers was $2,000 - $2,500.

That is what my sister did, she thinks it's great, she has a huge home. It cost her 2,9K spendy but she thinks it's worth it. I cannot afford it on retirement.
