We have had problems with our refrigerator for a while.

The freezer didn't seem to be working properly. The ice cream turned "soupy". The meat in the refrigerator seemed to go bad.

The repair man is here now.

He said the computer chip for the defrosting system was broken.

He showed the accumulation of ice on the back of the freezer. He is using a hair dryer to melt it.

He showed me the computer chip. Said after 6 years anything is liable to happen, just like if a laptop had a problem.

He took out the computer chip and showed it to me. Said he's sending it in to the manufacturer.

The manufacturer sent his company to my house. It costs $65 for him to walk through the door. Plus, whatever repairs.

What questions should I ask? Is he telling the truth?

We had a similar problem, but we did not have a "computer chip" -- we had a defrost cycle thermostat that was stuck in the open position, so freezer would not defrost, which caused that same freeze-up and "soupy ice cream" issue. We got to our meat before it went bad, luckily.

Our guy had the part with him ($20.00) and was able to replace within 1 hour, so service was only about $100.

If your frig uses the chip to control the defrost cycle, I'd believe him and go for it.

sounds like a reasonable explanation, and just like if you owned a Mercedes or Rolls, a Jenn-Air, being one of the top of the line appliance companies, is not cheap to buy or to fix.

That being said, I'm sure this fridge is $1500 or more new, so even if you had to spend $250 to fix, that's probably worth it. Any more than that, and you may want to look at simply getting a new one, as you could get a basic stainless (not Jenn-Air) from Best Buy for $700-900, that would be nice, and be brand new.

If he showed you the ice build-up in the evaperator coils in the freezer compartment, the defrost system is out somehow. The modern G.E. Refr.s have a computer board in them, and, yes, they do go bad just like a computer.... If he said it was the board, then he probably checked the elements first, and that only leaves the board. Unfortunately, he's probably right. The only alternative is a new unit.

If you already paid 65.00 for him to come in, might as well let him fix something. Ask him if he will deduct the 65.00 diagnostic from the cost of repairs.

He is most likely correct on all the of the above. Ask if he has any idea what it would cost to repair. If it is over 15yrs old,,,,I'd buy a new one!!!!!!!!!!
