i had to replace my dryer coil, and at first it glows red, then fades, is this supposed to do this?

The temperature sensor is probably telling the heating element that it has reached the proper temp. The coil then turns off. It could also be caused by a clogged vent and the dryer is holding too much heat.

Yup, that's how it starts up to heat.
