I have a forced hot water boiler via tankless coil hot water heater. Water has heavy iron and other typical minerals. Screen on hot water side of washing machine CONSTANTLY plugs up. Already double cartidges on domestic cold before boiler, I know I should get a softener system, but are there any other COST EFFECTIVE options? Does a cheap in-line screen (near washing machine)or filter system exist that can reliably withstand 170Deg. heat? Standard cartridge filter systems will fail on hot water systems. I just want to stop doing weekly maintence on the Washing machine. I've almost worn out the plastic inlet on it, which means a $100 soleniod replacement when you strip that out! Any Suggestions welcome!!

I bought my house about a year and a half ago, it used to be a on a slab, but a previous owner lifted it up and put a crawlspace under it. I noticeda few months later there was a soft spot in one of the bedrooms and I went into the crawlspace to check it out. I was able to pull the subfloor apart with my hand. I had a home inspection and somehow the inspector missed this.(I did not notice any mold, and have inspected it every few months and have seen none). The plywood on top of the subfloor is not that thick, and when you walk on it it bends. I do not plan to stay in this house for more than 4-5 years and would like to avoid spending thousands of dollars to fix it, but I am afraid that the next owner will hire a better home inspector who will catch this and I will have difficulty selling the house. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks

We have a boiler system, but we've never had one before and we've only moved in about a year. I've heard that it's best to have it serviced annually - we're not on a monthly payment plan - would the engineer just come and check it as and when we ask or would we have to be signed up to a plan? Also, how much would a one-off visit check cost on average?

A friend says a wire may have come lose on the adaptor and that I should take the plate off and check for lose wires. Is this something I can fix myself? (I have trouble putting batteries in a flashlight correctly.)

I have a couple of rooms not being used, so I shut the vents in extreme hot or cold weather but I read somewhere that this isn't a good idea . . .

These new regulations (PE something?), what does it mean if your electrician doesn't have them, though is otherwise qualified? Is it true you have to pay another electrician to inspect his work, thus paying twice for the same job?

I'm just curious as to how this all works. If I have a lighting fixture on a circuit, and I hook up a Radio Shack X10 dimmer module to it, WHEN it's anything BELOW 100% does that draw more current from that circuit?

My neighbour says it is still leaking through his kitchen ceiling. Why would this be? Is it really to do with me? I'm very confused as i have no water around up here at all! Can anyone help?

I have no idea how to open it up to change the battery. There's nothing written on it about opening, but there is a little arrow. Does this mean anything? I don't know if it will close again if I just pry it open. Should I just go for it and open it however I can? I'm obviously not too handy, thanks for the help.
