We have a boiler system, but we've never had one before and we've only moved in about a year. I've heard that it's best to have it serviced annually - we're not on a monthly payment plan - would the engineer just come and check it as and when we ask or would we have to be signed up to a plan? Also, how much would a one-off visit check cost on average?

British Gas seems a cheap option until your system breaks down. They will tell you they dont have the spares and have to order them. 3 weeks later your boiler MIGHT get fixed or maybe they will then decide to call the manufacturer in. The small companies are okay but will work out expensive as they tend to charge a huge mark up for spares. The best way is to ring the manufacturer and get yourself onto a service plan. These on average are £150 per year but will cover you for the annual service AND all parts and labour for breakdowns. In some cases this can save you over £1,000 in a year !!!!

Don't go on a British Gas plan. I found them useless. A small local company is better. Ask the Boiler manufacturers for the local service people

Any engineer would come to check it out at atime and date to suit you. Can't qoute you a price, but get an estimate when you make an appointment.
