I am thinking way ahead for my gardens next year. I would like some reccomendations from people living and gardening in the North East (southern New England) on some hardy plants. I would like to know some good species for a butterfly/hummingbird garden. I already have a few plants that attract them: butterfly bush, zinnias, salvia, daises, coral bells, lavender, begonias and a bleeding heart. These are the plants that I have seen the butterflies and hummingbirds on. I would like to expand the garden and attract more and different species throughout the spring, summer and early fall. I would also like reccommendations for evergreens, preferably with berries or leaves that change colors (to red in fall, for example) and some reccommendations for good cutting plants. I know that's alot, thank you in advance!

I've been trying to fix up my garden, but it seems like the old stuff keeps growing back.

The culprits are those furry leaves that look like rabbit ears, and there's also some wildflowers. They keep coming back (big-time).

How do I renovate the garden so I can start over fresh? It's in-between my patio and the surrounding fence. It's in an L-shape, wrapped around the patio. I'd say it's about 18' long, by 2' wide.

And if I have to dig all the old stuff up... how deep do I have to go? And how would I get rid of the dirt, and find new dirt to replace it?

We have a few wild pumpkins growing (this isn't the first time - apparently they're easy to start). One of them is nice and orange, although not huge.

Can I just leave it on as long as possible (I mean, before the first frost) or is there a point where I should pull it? I'm starting to see some discoloration on it.

Note: I'm in northern New England.

They are right next to my house. Picture an L shape. They are in the inside corner of the L. I've had people come and see if they can grind it down, but they can't get in there. It's too small of an area. I put some epson salt on it but I don't think it's doing anything. Someone please help me. I can't do anything in my garden till it's out. Thanks!

I rent 1/4 acre that is surrounded with 12-15 full-sized pine trees. The needles have turned half the yard into a dirt farm and the wind scatters them everywhere conceivable. I have a large fan rake but I have to beat at the ground rapidly just to get the motion going and it can take over two hours to do the entire lawn. Anyone know of alternative methods? I don't want to be up to my neck in them but raking pine needles is really exhausting compared to other kinds of work I do. The only search results I find are about how beneficial they are as mulch. Sheezz.

We bought our house 2 months ago and it shows only dirt and weeds. We're thinking of going through a service.

However, a friend told us that we just need to aerate and seed it in the fall and it should be ok by spring. Help!
