I just this week asked my Master gardener brother this same question. He told me just about what William B told you. If you pick the stem up and the melon falls off, it is ready to be eaten.

there is some good answers here but one sure way is look at the stem where it attaches to it. there will be a small crack at least 3/4 around it all the way is fully ripe
