Thanks to the excellent answer i received when i first posed a question about this i have noticed numerous small red ants by the trunk of the tree. the tree has been almost entirely "girdled" just above where it enters the ground. not sure if this is from the ants or something else. is there any good repair to the girdled area that might allow the tree to repair itself ?

Every year my Japanese Maganolia tree starts off with beautiful green leaves........and then becomes covered with a white to gray powdery substance, I have tried commerical sprays but it does not help.

I don't have a digital camera, so I can't take a picture, but it is easy to describe. I live in Indiana - zone 5, and this flower looks like a big weed-bush, about 4' wide and 4' tall. We were going to cut it down at first, but then it started blooming large 1" yellow flowers only at NIGHT. During the day, the flowers shrivel back up and are done, and new flowers bloom the following evening, around dusk. Any ideas?

I want to make a natural tropical high wall, against my 5’5 foot brick wall. I’m looking for more privacy. I have a lot of palm trees, so I was thinking Bamboo. I hear it’s a mess. My question is, is there any type of Bamboo that grows in single uniform? Just like a wall, one after another. Or do they all grow in clusters / groups?

A recent windstorm knocked over our beautiful willow tree. (it'd been poorly pruned and had several, weak trunks.)

1.How fast will a weeping willow tree regrow from the stump?

2. Would the tree be stronger if we just replanted one?

3. We still have a huge stump and a sprout that came out of it--if we cut the stump to the ground, will a willow sprout from it?

I've planted six or seven varieties of pepper plants along my fence inside my patio. They're mixed in between my running roses. I have several varieties of peppers all planted in a line along the fence with a rose bush in between every second one. My yield is still small but increasing. The hotter peppers are doing fine. I have Tobasco, Cayenne, Jalapeno, Habanero and hot green peppers. I also have mildly hot Verde peppers and red bells and green bells. Only the green bells are being affected. Every one I have picked when the tops are cut off have had garden slugs inside the peppers and I have had to throw them away. It's only the green bells and they are planted right beside another variety yet they are unharmed. What can I do to rid my peppers of these slugs?

I planted some geraniums and a mandevilla plant in separate pots, big, with new topsoil, put them in a sunny location with at least 5 or 6 hours of hot Florida sun, and it's been raining every day, so the soil has stayed moist. The mandevilla's leaves are so dry, but the soil is wet. I guess the sun is too intense and I should move it to a less intense spot. This is South florida, remember.
The geranium's leaves aren't all as dry, but some have turned yellow and have spots on them and a few leaves are dry.
Both plants have bloomed a little and both are only a few weeks with me, but I'd like to know the right combo of water and sun so they'll thrive.

I bought a house recently. It seems that the former owner has been neglecting it for quite some time. I hope someone can tell me what are these things in the following pictures as i am going to remove all the weeds and plant some evergreen bushes. BTW, I live in the Midwest and want some recommendation on some low maintenance evergreen bushes that flower. (If there are any.)

I just bought this house and the lawn is not in good condition. (I live in the Midwest.) I water it twice a day, once in the morning and once after sunset. But it just won't turn green. I tried the weedkiller/fertilizer, but it didn't help much. Here are the pictures of my lawn:

How do I fix it? What exactly is the problem? Thank you very much.

We moved into a house with several very small azaela bushes. Some them have very light green leaves and seem stunted. I put bone meal around them like my mother suggested. Anyone have any other ideas?

Hi everybody,

I bought Hyssop "Jubilee" last year for some friend's garden last year. We loved its perky green leaves, and its brilliant tall flowers. I left it to seed over winter, which it did splendedly.

I try to visit their garden once a week, and all seemed to be going well.

Today, I dropped off some castor bean plants, and took a two minute tour of the garden.

I noticed the Hyssop had a lot of brown spots on the leaves. I took a further look, and noticed some of the leaf skeleton showing. Upon turning the leaf over, I saw some baby bugs munching away (actually they dropped immediately to the ground).

I suspect it's what I call "earwigs".

Any ideas on how to proceed in correcting this early devastation? Or should I just leave em be? HELP!

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

i've four plants and only one has sprouted females so far. my biggest zucchini plant has two females with the fruit growing, but, well one of them almost seems to have stopped growing. the one that bloomed second has out grew the one that bloomed first...and the on the one that bloomed first, the blossom has fallen off of it. does that mean that it's done growing? i didn't get a chance to cross pollinate the one that fell off becase it fell off before it opened. the piece of fruit is very small less than two inches i believe....is it done growing?

also, the zucchini plants have a lot of leaves. i chop the ones that turn yellow off but should i chop off some green ones too? it almost seems like it's too crowded to sprout the fruit. i realize the leaves are supposed to be guarding the fruits from sun damage but is there ever such thing as too many leaves?
