Planting tomatos and peppers next to one another will have zero effect on taste of either. It is perfectly harmless

No problem, plant away, there will be zero effect.
By the way the same holds for planting 2 different kinds of chile together. Even if there is cross pollination there will be no affect on the first generation of fruit. Say you plant a habanero next to an anahiem, the habanero won't make the anahiem hotter, the genetic makeup of the fruit is purely that of the parent(anahiem) plant. Let the fruit mature, plant the seed, and that's a second generation with a mixed genetics and you might very well get some that are hotter than the seed parent plant.

Yes, your tomatoes will not take on the taste of the peppers. Although, you can plant sweet peppers next to, like jalapeno, hot peppers and they may sometimes make them hot. I have cayenne planted next to my tomatoes and they are fine, so go ahead and plant them side by side. Hope this answers your questions. Good luck with your garden!

Peppers with tomatoes are fine. Here is a veggie companion chart you can use in the future. It tells you what you should or should not plant with other veggies. Hope it helps. http://www.tinkersgardens.com/vegetables/companionplanting.asp
It also has a detail description of the veggie and how to plant it.
