Really easy. You will need to till your area with a tiller and then add a product called seed starter. After your area is all tilled and raked level then you just sprinkle the seed all over. After that you can lay straw down to keep the seed from migrating when watering. Water everyday for about 2 weeks. Lift the straw to see if the seed has germinated. If you have grass after the two weeks of watering then remove the straw and continue to water at least every two to three days. Once your grass has nicely rooted then a good drink once a week should do it.

. First, I would call my local nursery to find out what type of grass grows best in your area. There are many types of grass and some do well in certain areas but not others.
Now...how to plant.....if your yard is mainly weeds, spray the entire thing with roundup. Wait about three days and mow this as low as possible. Rent a dethatcher. Put it on the lowest setting and go over the entire yard. This will somewhat till the soil and remove the old thatch. Go over this with a bagging mower to suck up the dead weeds and thatch. Your lawn should look pretty barren about now. Rent an aerator and go over the entire lawn. This should pull plugs of dirt from the soil. If the ground is extremely hard, either water it first or wait until after it rains to do this. Now, it is time to plant the seed. DON"T buy cheap seed! It tends to have a mixture of weed seed in it and you'll be planting new weeds in your yard. Don't skimp on the amount you put down either. Usually the bag will tell you how much coverage you'll get. If seeding with a very fine seed (like bermuda) mix three pounds of sand to every one pound of seed and put it in a broadcast spreader. If using something like a tall fescue, do not add sand, just follow the label for the correct spreader setting. After spreading the seed, spread some starter fertilizer. Now....it's time to water.... You want to water enough to keep the seed moist, maybe five or ten minutes. The more times a day you can do this, the better. ( 3 to 6 times a day ) Do not water for long periods of time! Water like this for 7 to 14 days....until you see new grass coming up. Now, continue watering like this but only half as much for approx. another ten days. You should have some nice looking grass by now. Grass usually requires one inch of water per week to survive. Begin watering only once or twice a week but for longer periods. ( enough to get your one inch per week) It is best to water early in the morning. Good luck! I'm from Virginia, so it is possible that my method is not the best for California. Anyways, it should at least give you some direction.

Louisianna is hot but so ain,t florida. Down here nothing will grow in the winter months without rain but if you wait for the rainy season or have a daily watering, the best thing is what ever grows wild in your locality and find a place to buy haybales and scatter it all over the lawn and water it daily and you will get grass and lots of it.

The best and not expensive way is to have it hydroseeded. Lood them up in the yellow pages.
