I have 8 cedar birdhouses in my yard. Recently, after 2 years of hanging peacefully in the trees, I noticed that something has eaten around the holes - openings in them all, obviously something with teeth or a sharp beek. We have mice, squirrels and woodpeckers around here in winter -- any ideas what has done this? I am guessing it was maybe the woodpecker, that they make the hole larger so they can use the box to nest in themselves?

I have a row of Crepe Mrytles planted beside my deck. I just planted them last spring. They did fine, only I think the bugs were a big problem . When you are sitting on your deck eating a meal you dont want to have bugs flying all over you!
that is one problem.

The main question I have is this: I am wanting to plant a row of conifer trees , I am leaning towards using Leyland Cypress , because it grow really fast and I want it to do that. The problem is I will be planting them 4-5 feet away (South direction) from the Crepe Mrytles. Will this block the sunlight they need?

We are getting our sidewalk re-done b/c the tree we have outside our house has really ruined them. once the old sidewalk is gone, we'd like to put something on the cut tree roots so they won't re-ruin the sidewalk. What chemical can we put that does this but won't kill the tree?

I know absolutely nothing about growing flowers.

Also, I have this 8' long by 2' wide space along the side of my house I would like to use as my learning garden. You can't really see it, so if I screw it up, nobody can tell.
The side faces the west and gets LOTS of sun in the afternoon. What are some good plants I can use that are great for beginner gardeners?

I have a small Cattleya that I left out on my balcony for too long. I live in southern California, but it was especially cold this year. I brought it in a couple of weaks ago and noticed that its roots have died. The leaves are still green and firm. Will the roots regrow when it gets warmer? Is there anything I can do to encourage root growth? What about watering?

I planted a hedge between my friend's house and his wall, but his family told me to remove it (which I did) because they say that planting hedges next to walls causes the roots to grow into the wall and break it and it causes water to flow into the house, the walls of the house turn green, etc.
The hedge was box. Are they right or wrong?

Bought some bulbs....don't have a clue what I'm doing, as I don't have much of a green thumb. What type of soil, fertilizer, is best? Should I use one of those green weed mats? Are they hard to grow successfully?

without resorting to chemical fertilizers and weed killers?

I have a large back yard that is covered with weeds that may be removable after about 3 days of pulling on hands and knees. If there is no hope of accomplishing a grass lawn without the kind of chemicals I have tried to avoid using, I might as well just MOW 'EM down.

What do you think?
