perennial

Perennial's are supposed to live for years. Some die off over the winter due to excessive freezing or other damage. All perennials are subject to temperature ranges and exist in climates that meet these ranges. yet die off in colder climates. Many perennial's are treated like annuals, bacause of their temperature intolerance, and replanted each year or brought inside to live for the winter.

Many plants that we treat as annuals will act as perinnials if protected from the cold killing weather. I have geraniums that are 5 yrs old because I bring them inside for the winter. Ditto with Impatiens and also tropical plants.

So the final answer is: depends on the climate, the hardiness of the particular plant, and their exposure to the climate.

Annuals are a "one season" plant (one year), Perennials come back every year (usually after five years they don't look as good), and biennials grow their root systems and leaves the first year (or season) and the next year will flower. If you live in a mild climate you sometimes can keep your annuals going on through the next season or year.

perennial plants come back every year. Annuals, are called that because you have to replant them annually. That's a good way to remember which is which.

Perennials come back year after year

perennial plants come back every year. I am in the northeast and I have had dusty miller, petunias, and pansies come back year after year and they are annuals.
I think because the petunia embedded in the asphault and is protected. The dusty miller I cannot explain why it comes back year after year when it is an annual and should die after only one season.

Perennial. Annuals you have to replant annually. (That's how I remember the difference!) ♥
