On a home repair TV show, a man is talking about putting a tool or material under the door to hold it up while putting the door on its hinges. It sounds like he is saying "SHUMES." He also has a British accent, if that helps. What could this tool or material be? It looks like it's pieces wood?

I don't smoke, but my roommate smokes out of her bedroom window. I live above the entrance to an apt. complex, so people are always out there smoking. My room reeks of stale smoke. I've tried Febreze, Oust, etc etc. How do I get rid of the smell? My clothes smell like I'm a smoker, and my room just smells awful.

I live in Maryland (United States), I am a former auto mechanic, and I have a special card to purchase freon for cars. I am wondering if this card will allow me to buy R-22 freon for my home central A/C system? Do they still sell freon in one pound cans or only 30 pound tanks?

Thanks!!!!!

The magnetic strip on my most often used credit card wears out quickly. I am in Europe right now, and getting a replacement card from the US takes time. Is there a quick and simple way to fix the magnetic strip? I have seen cashiers wrap thin plastic around the card and swipe it that way, which has led me to believe that applying a strip of Scotch tape should do the same thing. Or is there a better solution, short of getting a new card?

I'm looking to replace my old furnace. Based on the quotes I received it would cost me approx. $800 more to install a 90% over an 80% efficient furnace. Is it worth it? I plan to live in the house 5-10 years.
Does the state of NJ still offer tax credits on energy star rated furnaces?

This year I planted a lavender bush in a large pot in the garden. It has grown really well and has flowered but in the last few weeks it seems to have grown very high and leggy, quite scraggy looking although the foliage at the bottom is still quite dense, underneath it is very brown despite regular watering and drainage. I have it on my patio which is in shade during the morning and sun during most of the afternoon. Just wondering what I'm doing wrong? Does it need an even bigger pot even though it's in a big one, or is lavender really suitable for pots or is better suited for garden planting? Also does it ever have to be cut back and if so when? Would be grateful for any help as I don't want to ruin it as it smells wonderful! Thanks!

All of a sudden my central air conditioner stopped working and its been over a 100 degrees the last couple of days so needless to say I am having heat stroke. It was working fine the night before and now the fan will not turn. I flipped the breakers thinking maybe that would do the trick but nothing. I then took a ruler and turned the fan manually and it started turning but kept making a clicking noise and then would make a humming noise. At the same time there was no cold air coming out. The top plate above the motor got so hot you couldn't touch it. Then the fan just stopped again and I couldn't get it to turn anymore. Any ideas?

We are first time homebuyers, and got a beautifully landscaped front yard, and back yard.
Now, we don't know the first thing about gardening, but are willing to learn.
What are the first tools we need? We don't even know about hoses, lawn mowers, etc. Please give us the names of the tools we need immediately, and brand names.
When I go shopping, I just get overwhelmed by the different brands out there.
So, initiate us into the world of gardening.

p.s. We have 3 rose bushes in the front, that are too tall and we want them to go. Lots of bushes in front that we want to select and weed out some. Want to spread grass under some trees or shady area. I know these are lots of questions, but someone can answer one or all. Thanks.

When I do laundry in the laundry room at my apartment, the clothes don't really come out very clean. It will remove smells and all that, but doesn't really do much for stains or marks on my clothing. I've tried the laundry mat and get about the same results. The machines where I use to live did a much better job, but that was in a totally different town.

I don't know if it's the water where I live, the machines at my apartment, or the detergent I use; or some combination of the three Does anyone have any tips that will help me get my clothes looking cleaner using the machine I have access to? The main thing is I don't want to spend a whole bunch of time pre-treating and/or scrubbing.
