All of a sudden my central air conditioner stopped working and its been over a 100 degrees the last couple of days so needless to say I am having heat stroke. It was working fine the night before and now the fan will not turn. I flipped the breakers thinking maybe that would do the trick but nothing. I then took a ruler and turned the fan manually and it started turning but kept making a clicking noise and then would make a humming noise. At the same time there was no cold air coming out. The top plate above the motor got so hot you couldn't touch it. Then the fan just stopped again and I couldn't get it to turn anymore. Any ideas?

Are you talking about the furnance fan or the condenser fan outside. I will assume you are talking about the outside fan. Turn the power off and then try to spin the fan, if it rotates freely, then the motor is not locked up and the problem is most likely a bad start capacitor.
At any rate, you need to call in a serviceman have have them check out the system. Running the system without the fan can cause other problems. If the unit freezes up, it could take out the compressor and you will have to replace the whole unit. It may take the guys a few days to get out to your house, they are pretty busy at the moment. good luck.

Wich fan are you talking about? It might be a capacitor. Is the compressor running? You wrote a long question, but included very little information. There is a fan outside and inside you know.
Anyway, change the capacitor and see what happens. They are not that expensive. It doesn't sound like the bearing is locked or frozen so you might get lucky by changing the capacitor.

Call a repair man. You may be looking at a full AC replacement, if which is about $3,000. Good luck.

I'm thinking you need to have a new one..or maybe cleaned out?
