The tank in the loft would be the header tank which provides the pressure to your central heating system to ensure that the radiators fill up. This tank should top up automatically due to the cistern valve in it. Could be possible that this valve is broken, or possibly stuck (the ball should be floating on the surface of the water in the tank).

It is the most likely cause! You need to check to find out why the tank has got so low and sort it. Any tank that heats water, has to have a minimum amount. Should you try to run the central heating, the tank can blow. It is dangerous! Get it checked by an Engineer, preferably a Gas Supply company, they may be expensive but a cowboy is likely to rip you off and make it more dangerous so it will be worth the expense. If you are a tenant, contact your landlord. Under the Housing Acts, anything to do with Gas Supply, Electricity and Sewerage are classified as "emergencies" and have to be made safe and or be repaired within 24 hours.

No. As long as the tank contains water it is ok.
(the level is just a matter of where the ball valve is set.

The most likely cause is one of the safety sensors in the boiler.
In the UK it is not legal to tackle the boiler without a specific CORGI qualifaction that covers domestic boilers, so call a plumber my friend.

If the boiler has been off since April, I assume you get HW from an immersion heater, this is not affected if the boiler won't start.

But as one of the other people said, if the boiler has been supplying HW then the fault lies in the 3 way valve/thermostat on convential systems or in the pressurisation of the system on combi-bolier system.

If the system is cold, the header tank in the loft should have some water in it, but not much. It fills up when the water heats up and expands.

If the hot water comes on, but not the heating, it's either the pump or the room thermostat (or the wiring between them)

it's not likely that your Central heating system will not turn on.
But, if the water in the header tank is so low that it fails to reach the outlet pipe, you could be in trouble. The boiler will call for water and if none comes than it will continue to call and the temperature is very likely to rise above normal. Check your ball valve and check that the inlet pipe is not blocked. Better still get a plumber in to have a look at it.

The water tank for your C/h boiler only tops up the system and only about 4/6 inches of water is needed in this tank. There are other faults that could prevent your C/H from coming on. Is your pump working, Is the room thermostat turned up, is your programmer set for C/H etc.
