I don't want to use chemicals and I need a cheap solution. So what are my options? Any outstanding ideas out there? With all the heavy rain lately the mosquito population is thriving especially in the ground covering located right up against my house.

I've closed and opened my pool three years in a row and it's always green and I always have to spend a lot of $ to get the water right. I close my pool correctly, to the letter! I'm thinking it might be best to empty out my pool when I'm ready to open it, then fill my pool up with a garden hose. I would save money doing this!

I want to create a Japanese Rock garden in front of the house, the are is 30 feet by 7 feet. I just bought me a small lime rock got them delivered this morning. After laying them on the ground, what is your idea / recommendation to get the look? I have seen MANY photos, but I know it wont be like that unless you hire a professional or spend tons of money. WOULD YOU PUT A SOLAR LIGHTS like so popular in the US? Along the edge of the rock garden? or not?

My lawn is really messy... I have weeds, crab grass all over the place. The soil is really hard, it's like rock hard. I have tried to pull all the weeds out, water the soil, and etc... BUT sooner or later the weeds pop up in 2 weeks. =( We have the messiest lawn in our neighborhood. What should I do? Are there any products that'll help my lawn?

I have one acre with trees here and there. I have been blowing them with my riding mower gathering them to several areas, then manually scooping them up into tons of trash bags. Once every year in the Spring. It really kills my back just doing the scoop and trash. I can not afford to hire professional, is there better way to do this? Also how often? Thank you.

Hi all. I have an apartment with no AC. My bedroom faces southwest, and is the only part of the partment that gets to hot in the summer. It is against the apartment complex's policy to have anything stick out the window - are there any units that will fit in the windowsill, but not stick outside the window? Any other units I can just plug into the wall?

What's the technique on planting or putting stuff on the ground that's totally bare?

Next to our sidewalk.. there is a 3 inch gap consisting of just hard dirt and then next to it is grass...

I was making plans to maybe plant wild countryside flowers in the long gap, but my husband went ahead and bought red mulch and covered it up.. I was furious...

How would you go about this?? Was mulch meant to go in the bare areas.. or maybe grass seeds or flowers??

Have replaced it once... exact same hole. There are other hydrangeas close by which are having no problems and the sprinkler system seems to be hitting all of them equally. I've checked the soil and it seems to have the same moisture content as where the others are doing great.
Could it be something in the soil? Am I being fooled? Any suggestions?
I am thinking of cutting it back and giving it a bit of root stimulator and a fish emulsion feeding.
It is a 'Nikko Blue'..., there is an 'Endless Summer' with which I am having almost exactly the same issue. Others around it are doing fabulous.
Zone 6, have them in part shade... this really should not be happening.

I have an old house (80 or 90 years) and I want to redo the dining room. It has molding everywhere (floor, chair, crown, doors, etc.) the boards look and feel sturdy enough. I need to strip most of the paint on the molding and re-paper and paint the whole room.
I don't mind making this a huge project as far as labor as long as I keep the cost down.
Would it be a good idea to take the molding off the walls to strip and prime them and to make papering the walls easier?

Can you guys give me any other tips?

Planted bare-root dwarf cherry tree in March. It bloomed the next month. A couple of weeks later the blossoms turned brown, then the leaves did, too. My husband brushed them off after a couple weeks.
When I planted it the dirt in the hole had a lot of water in it (but it was full-on rain season so I didn't think it was a problem) The apple 10 ft away is doing great. I planted the apple 1 day later when it wasn't raining and it's hole didn't have as much water in it. They both got fruit tree fertilizer and I mounded the dirt in the middle of the hole for the root ball to "sit" on.
Should a cherry tree have leaves in June? How do I check if it is dead? We are Zone 7

we were looking around at rental houses today and came across the perfect house! only the people in there now smoke like chimneys and the place smells gross. i have a feeling that this kind of stench is permanent but i just wanted to put the question out to see if anyone had any experience with it. i have asthma and bad allergies and just standing in the place (no one was smoking at the time) made me congested. any ideas or should we just let it go?
