Yeah the landlord should have to repaint....but I would suggest that they shampoo the carpets as well. The best thing to do is to open up the windows in the house and let it breath. It will help take out the smell in other places too, like the kitchen cabinets and closets. If they don't re-paint then wipe down as much as you can with some household cleaner. I like PineSol cause its got a nice smell but you can use whatever you like. But the best trick is to let it breath. But trust me...re-painting alone isn't going to help that much.

If it's a rental the landlord should paint the place...If the space is carpeted before you move your stuff in get 5-6 boxes of cheap baking soda and liberally sprinkle the carpets. I also added a large box of idodized salt... The baking soda neutralizes the odor and the salt picks up any loose dirt. Give it acouple days or more and vacuum it up. That should help with the smell in the carpet.. Wash the walls with a product called Tri Sodium Phosphate..(TSP) you should be able to get it from Lowe's/home depot/hardware store... Follow instructions that will clean your walls. If it still smells- Bring it up with the landlord..

The landlord should have had this seen to already.
But if it were *your* house, what you would want to do is scrub it down with Lysol and vinegar- and be prepared to change the water often. Shampoo the carpet thoroughly. Then paint the walls with a sealant like Kilz to control the odor. After that, you will be able to paint it whatever color you wish.
If the landlord is willing to give you a break on the rent for doing this work, go for it. Otherwise, either he should see to it, or you should go elsewhere.
Good luck.

It's actually not hard, of course you need to air it out, but then all you have to do is put a cup of vinegar in every room. Let them sit. If the window treatments are fabric, wash them and if there are carpets put baking soda on them and vacuum. Within hours the vinegar will absorb most of the smell. If you always deep a cup in each room it should stay odor free (of course when you cook, it will have an odor for awhile). Vinegar is cheap and I use it all the time to keep my house free of any odors.

Repaint the walls, steam clean the carpets, and place little containers around with vanilla extract, and some with baking soda. When you clean the carpets use baking soda as well, simply add some to the water you put in. It will go away. Air it out for a few days.

If you are renting the house ,the landlord has the job of painting the place before you move in. Just depend what kind of contract you sigh. Find out first.

if you wash the walls with clorox clean up it should get it all out...if you don't want to do that just repaint and you wont smell a thing for weeks but paint and no smoke afterwards. When i quit smoking i did that and it worked.
