Turning off the pilot can save natural gas, but do I turn of the main gas shut-off or just the pilot?

Yes !! Turn the system off in accordance with the instructions, and switch off the gas-feed line to the heater !!

I turned off my wall-mount gas heater last summer and saved almost $100 (USD) !! Also, just the pilot burning was keeping my room about 10 degrees warmer !!

Good luck and enjoy the Summer !! And remember to relight the system BEFORE cold weather... so if something goes wrong you can FIND a repairman

There should be a shut off valve just before the heater, no need to shut off the main. If you have a gas stove or hot water tank shutting off the main will shut them off as well.

If your heat system has a separate main valve I would or if you have no other gas appliances.
