I have a Hotpoint model HDA2000 dishwasher. I rarely use it--the last time was probably around Christmas. I usually just "wash & go" my dishes by hand.

Last evening I loaded the thing, added detergent, and set it to "Heavy Wash". All the thing does is hum for a minute or two, and then it stopped doing anything. Then, every few minutes, it will hum some more, then stop. I peeked inside, and it's very apparent that nothing has taken place yet, except that there is now some water in the bottom of the washer basin.

After a while, I gave up and unlatched the door, to turn the machine off. Then I went to bed.

Yes, I read the instruction manual; nothing is blocking the washing arm at the bottom. It would appear that I am doing everything correctly. So what am I missing? Why won't the thing start running? I should mention that in the past, it has worked just fine.

I'm living in a Housing Association property. I wrote to the Housing last year complaing about my neighbours trees & over powering Landii hedge. Neighbour did eventual hack a few foot off Landii hedge & lopped one branch. I'm still not happy because all their trees are 4-5ft higher than my house, two were over hanging my roof & has ripped part of my gutter away. I've taken matters into my own hands (now i totaly regret doing) & have got a friend to cut off everything which was over hanging my boundery. My neighbours have now told me that its a conservation area & the trees have a preservation order. The Housing have told them to call the police, but they didn't, which i was very greatfull for. I'm now in real big trouble with my Housing Association & i'm not sure what is going to happen with regards to conservation area rules & preservation order. If i knew i was going to get into all this trouble & cause all this upset & distress, i wouldn't have bothered with any of this! Any advice?

I am not sure of the name of the part, but the device that clicks when lower the lid of my washer no longer functions (thank goodness that's the problem instead of something more expensive). I've looked into a replacement part (around $30), but I can't figure out how to remove the top from my washer. Any ideas?

Anybody know the typical fire rating requirement for an interior door going into a single-car garage? I suspect it is one hour, but not positive.

I'm in Quebec, but I suspect the code is the same across Canada.

I have a febreeze addiction, and recently came up with my own version. Ultra concentrated fabric softener in a spray bottle mixed with water. It works and smells wonderful, but I was just wondering if anyone else has any other ideas!!!

How can we stop our pond water looking green? We have fish, plants, filter and pump. The filter and pump are cleaned regularly and we have tested the Ph levels (OK)?

I am fixing some concrete steps, and I will be taking some ciment off and I will need roughly 1/4 cubic meter of concrete for the repair. I will be pouring over existing ciment, so what kind of mix do you suggest?

I have an old gas boiler that runs just fine. I have gotten two different ideas on what to do. One person told me to wait till it fails then replace it. The other said replace it now and save on the heating costs. Any ideas?
