How can we stop our pond water looking green? We have fish, plants, filter and pump. The filter and pump are cleaned regularly and we have tested the Ph levels (OK)?

Green pond water is the cause of having too many nutrients in your pond for the size of biological filter you have. What you can do to achieve clearer water is to do your best to reduce the organic matter in your pond and to increase your filter size.A UV filter is excellent for clearing green water.

The key to healthy, clear water is to achieve a balance between the various inhabitants. The plants abaorb mineral salts and carbon dioxide from the water and, in the presance of sunlight, creare food materials and oxygen. The fish absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide through their gills; apart from their aesthetic attraction they feed on such pests as water lily beetles, mosquito larvae, aphids and caddis fly. They also fertilize the plants with teir excreta.
So long as the plants - particularly the submerged oxygenators get plenty of light and have to compete for minerals, the microscopic algae that make the water murky will have little chance to thrive. On the other hand, there must not be too much light in relation to the number of oxygenators. It is vital, therefore to work out the number and size of the pools inhabitants. There cannot be too many under water oxygenators, especialy in the first year or two; after that any surplus can be removed. But floating and deep water aquatics must never cover more than half the pools surface, so as not to create too much shade.
Murky water indicates that there are to few under water oxygenating plants to compete for the available light and minerals, or that too little shade is cast by water lilies. Correct these causes of imbalance, and then if necessary use permanganate of potash to clear the water. Make a saturated solution by shaking the crystals in a jar of water untill the crystals are dissolved. Stir in a maximum of one tea spoon 5ml, of the soloution for every 50l of pond water. the water should not turn more than a pale pink and should clear away in a few days, repeat later in the season.

Get some barley straw from your local aquarium or garden centre. Suspend the straw in the outflow from the pump and in about 2/3 weeks the water will become crystal clear. Green water is very common at this time of year due to the burst of growth of algae. You will need to replace the barley straw every 6 months or so.

It is the time of year for Algee bloom. This is a common problem in every area. YOu can also try testing your water for PH level and make sure that the water is in the appropraie level. I saw you have fish, if they are Koi they are very sensitive to PH where as a gold fish can live in about anything. But, with that in mind you want healthy water. You could take water to a local store and have them test it as well...

Green away works but only temporarily. The trouble is that it's the sun that turns the water green. Do you have a UV light box filter? We have one of these and keeps the water lovely and clear.

I had a pond packed with fish as quickly as. I went away for a fortnight, got here back and that they have been all long gone. We concept it would desire to be a heron or something and it nonetheless remains a secret. Did they have a community to guard below, i.e. weeds, overgrowing flowers, and so on. regrettably, I had cleared my pond up (merely to make it seem extra useful) and that i think of that replaced into the subject. besides, I even have now filled the section with soil as i replaced into incredibly disenchanted at dropping them. can't comprehend the buried glove nonetheless.

If the green is looking like split pea soup.........then you must invest in a UV filter to clear the water. There are many kinds and sizes as well as prices. I keep increasing the size of my pond and have to keep increasing the UV size. I use 2 fishmate UV Bio compact filters. and the best price I have found so far is:
UV & Bio Pond Filter

CE-11194 Compact 8W.... $104.99... ........($83.99 )
CE-480446 Compact, 16W $144.99....... ( $115.99 )
It serves a dual purpose. It gives filtration and UV for the algae
.......................NOTE........................
I don't know the size of your pond so you will have to decide which one.
ALSO I have found it is cheaper to order the light kits (when they need replacing) to order the 16W compact you get 2 and they are cheaper that way.

Good Luck!
PS I have gone from a 90 gal walmart pond in 4 stages until I reached 2,000gallons, with Xavan liner and geotextile underlayment. My daughter says no more 'cause they will start charging taxes on lake front property.

PSS if you have koi they need way more oxygen than goldfish. So I use an aerator. That also helps with the algae.
