I'm suffering in great pain from severe edema which made my legs rigid and unable to bend at all. My liver is swollen with ascites. I have a bit of fluid in base of lungs. since oral diuretics have not diminished the edema yet - I'm worsening daily. I want to go for a relatively recent powerful treatment called ultrafiltration where they hook someone up to 2 catheters, left & right, & using a special filtration machine (not dialysis) they can filter the blood andremove up to 5 liters of water during a 8-hour stretch to relieve the systemic edema. But here in NY city - I called many doctors, cardiology depts., hospitals, and they scowled and gave me no help to track down how to receive this treatment & where it is done. Most knew what it was but refused to guide me to how to get it. Please can anyone help me to locate a facility in NYCity which accepts CHF patients for this dramatic, powerful, rapid method of resolving their edema. All whom I spoke to scorned me. Please help me.

We found out about a month ago that my dad had high cholesterol. He's never been one to take care of his eating habits, so I wasn't really surprised to hear it. The doctor put him on meds right away which kind of made me a little upset 'cause he never exhausted the option of a good diet. I went with my dad today for a follow-up and I discussed diet with the doctor and he had this to say:
1. diet has VERY LITTLE to do with cholesterol and getting rid of it, it's ALL ABOUT GENETICS --does that make any sense??? I thought it was an absolutely rediculous comment
2. I then asked him about carbohydrates."what about carbs? what should his daily intake be of it?" his answer was "i'm not worryng about carbs for him because he's not diabetic" i replied "so he can eat carbs everyday without it having any type of effect on him?" he replied "nope, nothing" i replied "but my father doesn't exercise" he replied "oh right...he needs to exercise then" and that was that!
Am i missing something here??

My doctor wants to maybe look into whether or not I have a hole in my heart. He thinks that it may be a cause for my frequent, severe, and abnormal migraines. Has anyone ever had a hole repaired in order to cure their migraines? Did it work?

Thanks for responding to my previous question.
My grandfather had a heart attack yesterday. He is still alive... as it was a relatively "small" attack. However, he did obtain a 60% block. The doctor wishes to do a triple bypass surgery to remove all the scarred tissue instead of just giving him drugs. This will happen in about three days' time so that all the blood thinner is cleared from my grandfather's system.

I just need to know... What is the survival rate of such a surgery?

Thank you once more.

My husband has high blood pressure and been prescribed Crestor & Micardis. But, due to high costs, we are unable to afford his medications. What are YOUR food suggestions? Everyone always say "diet and exercise" and we know that. My husband does not have a problem with his weight. He's 38 years old, 165lbs., 5'7" tall. He's still muscular (somewhat) due to years of body building. His siblings (all under 45 years old) & parents are all under medication for high blood pressure & high cholesterol.
