Heart murmers can be 'innocent' or serious. If a child had rheumatic fever as a child, there can be damage. Some are caused by defective heart valves, mitral or aortic. It is best to have them checked by a cardiologist, who will do a stress test on a treadmill, and an ECG, (echocardiogram, to asses the damage.) and EKG. Some people are born with two aortic valve 'flaps' rather than three. (Bicuspid aortic stenosis.) Don't be a walking time bomb. Get things checked!! Heart valves can be replaced, now a fairly common procedure, but if you wait too long until symptoms occur, your chance for a good recovery decreases! (Shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, swelling of ankles, fatigue.)

Murmurs are abnormal heart sounds that are produced as a result of turbulent blood flow, which is sufficient to produce audible noise. This most commonly results from narrowing or leaking of valves or the presence of abnormal passages through which blood flows in or near the heart. Murmurs are not usually part of the normal cardiac physiology and thus warrant further investigations. However, they sometimes result from harmless flow characteristics of no clinical significance.

When heart contract & push blood to Aorta the mitral valve of heart opens. To avoid returning of blood from arota Mitral valve shuts. If their are some roughness or stiifness due to vegitation
(It generally happens if some one had rheumatic fever in child hood) the blood starts trickling through mitral valve & this produces a sound, it is mur mur.

It is a leaky value. It causes a slightly uneven heart beat . it is not painful. It can result in infections in the heart lining, but rather unlikely. In small children it usually grows together. Good thing to tell your dentist or let you doctor know before any type of surgery so they can take precautions against infection. I didn't know about mine until late in adult life. It is sorta genetic in our family.
