I just started sewing about a year ago, and I didn't want to buy a new, expensive machine - just in case it didn't work out too well! Well, my father-in-law gave me this old sewing machine that he had been having for whatever reason. It is a Singer 237 Fashion Mate (quite aged). I don't have the instruction manual (but just ordered it from Singer's website). I was just wondering if anyone knows if I am able to quilt with this machine? Or would I need a different type of machine? What is the difference between sewing and quilting when it comes to machines? Is it the machine itself or the needle or something? I would just be doing a basic quilt with squares (none of the patterns and stuff yet!). Any help or tips about your beginner-quilting experiences would be appreciated! Thanks so much! :)

I'm relatively new to sewing (I've been doing it for years, but I haven't done anything outside of beginner). I would like to try sewing clothes with a pattern.
My question is, are McCall's patterns a good place to start? If they aren't, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

My mom has a few silver dollars. Some from 1881 and some from 1882, with no mint marks. I'm guessing these are the least valuable ones from Philly. However, she has one with a strange mint that looks like either a star or an arrow where the usual mint letter would be. It isn't a letter like I see referenced on coin sites. Does anyone know what this might be?

I would like to know how much fabric, how much to cut, etc. and the exact way to make these. I'd like to do the ones made with quilt like knotted squares and the one piece ones. I've done a search & I can't get exactly what I need so I was hoping someone who has actually done it could help. It looks pretty simple, but I'm not very crafty. Any help would be really appreciated!

I am knitting a pair of slippers and the pattern calls for 2 balls of acrylic or bulky yarn - do I use both skeins at the same time? Does it also depend on the yarn and how thick it is?

For example, I have seen a bolt of fabric with teddy bear torsos, faces, and arms printed on it, and you would cut out the pieces, sew them together, and have a completed bear.

I want a simple one for an angel, but the stores have no idea what sort of fabric I mean.

Hi,

When I try to sew something on my sewing machine, one side looks nice the other side is a tangled mess of thread and then it gets jammed. Any ideas on what may be the problem and how do I fix the problem?
