with a multiple of a 4 plus three in cast on....do Knit 2 Purl two ending with Purl 1. It makes a great borken rib pattern whcih is the same on both sides.
Do a swatch....get a gauge for how wide you want the scarf and mke it about 51/2 to 6 ft

the easiest scarf pattern is that your guage is 5 stitches to the inch so cast on 20 stitches, knit every row until it measures 6 feet then bind or cast of.
other than that you can go to Lionbrand.com, the scarves are about half way down.

The easiest pattern I know is
K2, P2 for the entire row then
P2,K2 on the next row
then repeat the two rows for the entire lenght of the scarf

go to walmart and purchase a nifty knitter and you can make scarves on it any length and width and any type of yarn. it's fun, i can put out a scarf in about two hours now.
