My mom has a few silver dollars. Some from 1881 and some from 1882, with no mint marks. I'm guessing these are the least valuable ones from Philly. However, she has one with a strange mint that looks like either a star or an arrow where the usual mint letter would be. It isn't a letter like I see referenced on coin sites. Does anyone know what this might be?

My 2003 Red book says the mint mark is on the reveres above the letter "D" in the word Dollar. I did not see any other notations. Hope that helps.

Yes, the mint mark is on the reverse (Eagle side) below the wreath. The mint marks in 1881-82 were none, CC-Carson City, O-New Orleans and S for San Francisco. There is an 1882 O over S variety. Silver dollars are large and were very hard to mint in the first place. The dies never did last very long in the 1880's for the mintage's then were high most of the time except Carson City. Dies would break and new ones made, there are a lot of factors to consider. Some of the mint workers lacked some skills, die steel was not so hot and the government wanted silver dollars to keep the silver mining big Whigs happy for they at least voted and helped candidates with cash. With a lot of obverse and reverse dies breaking there are a lot of varieties and some are very rare and of course some are not. When they made new dies they sometimes made something a little different or as the die started to break it made a variety by having cracks or something added or missing. There is also a possibility some one did it after it left the mint. You need to see a coin dealer who has the Van Allen book of silver dollar varieties. I do not but if I saw the coin I could tell if it was an after minting thing. Best bet check out a couple of coin dealers.
