I am knitting a pair of slippers and the pattern calls for 2 balls of acrylic or bulky yarn - do I use both skeins at the same time? Does it also depend on the yarn and how thick it is?

Usually the pattern will specify "hold two strands together" if it is required. If it does not then the only other time you would knit with two strands is if you used a thinner yarn and used two strands to make it bulky.

You will use all, or most, of the yarn, but not both skeins at the same time. Assuming only one color, you will knit until one ball is almost done then begin the second. Later, you will work the loose ends back into the pattern.

If you are using two colors, you will probably swap off, the procedure is the same as changing to a new skein, or set one aside while you work the pattern. While you may swap between the colors, you will not simultaneously knit with both skeins at once.

Reread your pattern. It should tell you. If you're supposed to use both together, it'll be clear. Send me a link to the pattern, if you want, or write down exactly what that part says, and I'll be glad to look it over and see what I think it's saying. Click on my avatar for an email link.

One reason I use two smaller skeins instead of one big one is that I put both slippers or mittens on the needles at the same time. Each is knit with its own yarn, but my increasing and decreasing are always even from one mitten or slipper to its mate. Cast one on with one skein, shove the stitches down on your needle, and lay that skein to one side of your lap or workspace. Pick up your other skein and cast on as normal with the second skein. Just be sure you switch skeins whenever you switch slippers.

You would get two balls of identical yarn, and use them one after the other. Since it's a pair of slippers, chances are each slipper will take almost a full ball of yarn.

look at the pattern where the guage is. this is where it will say if your knitting with one or two strands together through the projects, if its not there then look at any notes.
