Ever enjoy eating something, until you wonder why it's even a food?

Beef liver (and I assume Chicken liver too) has the following functions (amongst others):

-metabolizes toxins
-produces urea (urine)
-contains ammonia
-produces bile.

So why is a toxin/ammonia/urine/bile -filled organ even edible, and why wouldn't it have a bad taste?

My theory is that cows and chickens don't consume many toxins, because their diet is so restricted.
But that doesn't explain the other 3 icky things.

Hello, i bought some snack raisins for my son, about 2 weeks ago i opened a box to discover maggots, so i opened a 2nd and a 3rd box and all were contaminated with maggots. i threw all of the boxes and packaging away and believed this was a one off. I recentently bought some more of the same brand raisins and today have discovered the same contamination with a Best before end of august 2007! What advice can you give me with dealing with this matter. I have contacted the company and am awaiting a return call. im concerned that if this has happened to me twice that maybe all the produce is contaminated. please advice me on what to say. many thanks

Every time I make chicken soup, everyone has gas from it and my son has loose diapers. I would like to know what I can do to prevent this as we like soup, especially when we have colds, which is when I make a big pot of it. Does it have anything to do with using bouillon chicken cubes instead of chicken broth from a can? I do this since it is cheaper. I add: Chicken breast meat, carrots, onions, celery, potatoes and noodles - all ingredients we eat otherwise with no problems. Any suggestions? Advice? Thanks :)

I took a pork tenderloin out of the freezer to thaw, and accidently left it on the counter for 3 hours (I usually thaw meat in the fridge) when I got home, it was still cold when I touched it- it possibly may have even still been a little frozen in the center, but I don't know. I've heard that when you thaw meat at room temperature it allows bacteria to grow...is this meat still ok because it was still pretty cold when I realized it was on the counter?

I'm helping with my godmother with preparations for my godfather's 50th birthday. She's organising a surprise barn-dance for him in our local village hall.
So my job is to cook baked potatoes for 80 people. I'm fine with cooking them but the conundrum is how do I keep them hot? I'll be cooking them at my house but transporting them down the road to the hall... I thought maybe an insulated cool-box to keep in heat but there's no way I'll have enough room for that many baked potatoes!
Any ideas? Any handy boy scouts out there?
Thanks in advance for your useful suggestions!
