I've had a dim sum that looks like thick jello or agar in Chinese restaurants. I know it's made from rice which is soaked for a day or so, fermented a tad, then ground up somehow. When it's finished it looks like sheets of white jello or black jello (and those taste like licorice). They're also sweetened. Does anyone have a recipe for this stuff. When it's served, it's often cut into size with a pair of scissors.

I just went to an old Vietnamese grocery store, everything is 50% off. So I got a bunch of random Chinese stuff, some of it is not labeled in English. I thought it was food, but by the taste of it, it must be something else. The package says "health food" on the back

The first thing is called amomum costatum, it appears to be a tree nut (?), but I tasted one and wow, talk about bitter and weird. its extremely bitter. What is this and would be a use for such a thing?

The second thing is unlabeled, it it a tree nut/fruit thing, it is large, about the size of an egg, but its shell is dark brown. The inside is sort of styrofoam-like with seeds, its very sickening sweet and tastes like saccharin, and very bitter at the same time. Eww! Any idea what it is, and why someone would use it?

The last thing is a box labeled "chinese herbs", and has the following: radix angelicae sinensis, radix paeoniae alba, radix rehmanniae, and rhizoma ligustici wallichii.

Any ideas?

I lived in China for a year and let me tell you, the food there is AMAZING. Makes the stuff here taste bad.

If you've eaten in a Chinatown or similar area you can count yourself as a "yes" too.

I love Pad Thai noodles with chicken, but I started wondering if it is fattening? It seems like a pretty light dish, but I could be completely wrong.

I bought the red Sofrito and my BF's uncle said I should have got the green. Is there a reason or is he just stupid? (He is one of those people who contradict everything, so I don't know when to take him seriously or tell him to f*ck off.)

I can't cook and my fiance is coming home after being away for a long time. I want to surprise him by cooking something from his culture. I need a recipe that is very step-by-step and precise as i really can't cook and mess up the simplest of meals.

I have neighbors below me in an apartment complex that are Indian. For many months, they have been cooking the same food every evening (around 8-10pm) and the smell comes out of their apartment window and up to mine. I can't close my windows for specific reasons relating to my health. My question is, what is it that can be causing such a foul smell. I love Indian food, curry, tandoori, everything and believe me, this is not the typical smell I'm used to. What can this foul smell be. It is god awful, and at 3:45am yesterday, I was awken to that horrible smell again. My nose was burning, thats how bad it was. What could it be? I don't want to ask them since I would not want to seem confrontational. But maybe if I can figure out what it is, I can politely write them about it.
