Generally, soul food is high in fat, and sodium, so yes, too much soul food can be a bad thing. My diet pretty much consisted of anything I could stomach, I lived off crackers and toast for the first 3 months, then I just went back to what I was eating normally. Ignore family topping up your plate for seconds or thirds, since 'you're eating for two', because in pregnancy you only need something like an extra 200 calories a day, maybe not even that much. I avoided fish (purely because it made me vomit..., some fish is very good for you but I couldn't handle the smell), deli meat, soft cheese etc.

Traditional soul food is very high in fat and salt, which clearly isn't very healthy (and unfortunately mortality rates for African-Americans are high). There are a number of people, however, who have adjusted traditional recipes to be lower in the unhealthy ingredients so that it is consistent with modern dietary guidelines. This is actually true of a lot of ethnic food - because previous generations did more physical labor, they were better able to handle heavy foods, but we as a society have become inactive and need to cut back on what and how we eat.

Soul Food can be seen on the streets in Harlem. The food tastes good, and is only one of our cultural heritages to the world.
The problem is that a lot of us Black People get high blood pressure, and hypertension and high cholesterol, and kidney disease.
It is interesting to note, that studies were done of Native Americans that lived in the Southwest. These people had gone off of their regular diets, and were eating American fast foods. The Native American population began to have a lot of health problems.
Here is the point, child.
All of that talk about soul food has little to do with our actual regional diets in Afrika. So..when you eat what you think is good, it's because that's what we had to work with after giving all the good food to the slaveowners.
There is even more to this, but your parents will discuss this with you when they are ready.
Good question,
Mister

Soul food is another way of saying comfort-food. There is nothing wrong with fried chicken and mashed potatoes, as long as you balance it out with many other less-fattening foods like veggies (not drenched in butter) and fruits (a variety is best, but watermelon works too).
If you eat lots of "soul food" make sure to stay physically active. it tastes great, it is just generally the unhealthy things that are the most fun to eat, so work them buns off!

Soul food is okay, but the important thing is to get a balanced diet consisting of a variety of foods including fruits and vegetables.
Some of the meats used in soul food are a bit too fatty to be eaten in every meal, but they are okay if not overdone.
Keep your portions reasonably sized and balance your diet appropriately and there is no danger.
I like Mexican food, and many of the same problems can arise from eating too much of it. The same precautions should be taken. Watch your portions, balance your diet, and enjoy your meals and your long, healthy life.

The name Soul Food is a joke. Soul Food is just plain good old down on the farm cooking. If you listen to all this hulla baloo these days about bad foods other then in the choke and puke places like McDonald's, Burger king, etc.... any food is good for you if eaten correctly in proportion daily.

Real soul food recipes start out with tablespoons of lard. Our people have many health problems related to our way of preparing food. High blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes just to name a few. But damn, despite all of this, I will die knowing that I have never eaten a tofu burger or this other healthy crap and I will leave this earth with a good taste in my mouth. Girl, you are making me want some collard greens and hamhocks.

Its all in how you cook it. You cant use alot of pork in your food although i know it is very savory. Try smoked turkey instead. Also lay off the fried foods. I bake alot of my meats now that i have to prepare my own foods. And another thing cut back on salt. My mom puts salt on everything which has turned me against it, but i use more herbs and spices for taste now. And forget about what other people say about the food you eat, "It aint killed you yet!" lol.

Black people have a much higher obesity rate than the rest of Americans. I would definitely say that is caused by the way the food is prepped. Anything that tastes really good is almost always bad for you, haha.
