I have multiple options at work: I can use paper towels, which are made from recycled material, I can use an electrical hand dryer or I can use fabric towel from a dispenser roll. All these modes create a certain level of impact on the environment, from the production over maintenance to disposal. Which one does the least amount of damage to our lovely planet?

Does anyone know if there are any environmental benifits to shopping in the clearance section of a store? Thrift store shopping is clearly an environmental practice, as it re-uses products that would otherwise be at the end of their life. What about the clearance rack? They drop the prices because an item is not selling usualy, so by buying them are we rescuing them from the dumpster?

Just wondering if my frugality could also be an environmental habit, or if I'm just saving money.

Like many people, I am trying to go green and switch to florescent lights. However, I know that some people have neurological reactions to these lights, such as headaches or even seizures.
I wonder if fish can be affected badly too.
Before I switch to the more eco-friendly lights for my goldfish, I wonder if anyone knows if any studies have been done on the effects that florescent lights have on aquatic animals.
If anyone here knows of any websites on such a study that would be most appreciated.

I am looking for ideas on how to make our new school building more 'green'/eco-firendly/energy-saving. It is has not been designed yet so now is the time to get ideas together.

My son and I have this environmental battle going on. I'm telling him to use a regular plate to eat his meals and then wash it.
He says he rather use a styrofoam plate since less water is needed to produce a styrofoam plate than to wash a regular one.
Is he right or just lazy??

"american_wardog" posted a little while ago about a water bottle ban in San Francisco. That got me looking at the story about SF banning plastic bags. Of course as someone else commented on that story, banning the bags is a band aid solution and if widely used will just put us back to deforesting our country to make paper.
Here is an idea.
City and state governments can offer a tax reduction for stores that participate. Stores sell cloth bags that could have the business logo. They offer a small percentage off for people who use their particular cloth bag and they are also required to collect a tax for anyone who doesn’t have a bag and uses plastic or paper.
It would not be that difficult or inconvenient to carry a few cloth bags when you go shopping. No more need for oil to make plastic bags and no need to cut down trees for paper. Since the bags would be used over and over the resources required are less and there’s less trash.
Recycling good, not creating trash better.

I was wondering if it wold be possible to rig up a mini wind turbine on the top of a camper van so that when you are driving it would create energy to store in a battery.

Or would the extra energy needed to drive the van due, to the drag from the, any energy made by the turbine?

If so can you get mini camping turbines?

Thanks,
Martin.
