Try the LED kind. They will eventually replace even the CFL bulbs - they give off more light, and they are much more energy efficient as well.

Try using Halogen or get your compact fluorescent at IKEA they have a much better selection including some that produce light that looks and feels more like incandescents. I use a combination of lights and for reading I have a gold lined shade to improve the light power and provide a soothing glow. Coloring your lampshade can do a world of good.

While I agree with you that some fluorescent bulbs are of low quality(older models, and/or cheaper brands), there are many compact fluorescents that provide high quality light with only a fraction of the energy expended by inefficient incandescent bulbs. Look for those brands that advertise natural and/or full spectrum light... these will be quite useful for your seasonal depression.

Biran Sefar is correct. A lot of CFLs have a sickly yellow or green glow, but there have been vast improvements with the design of full spectrum bulbs. Check at your hardware store again if it has been a while, you might be surprised.
The answer to your winter SADS is to use a vitamin D supplement. Approx 2000 mg per day is recommended. It also helps prevent austeoporosis (Vitamin D is used in the body for uptake of calcium), and either cancer or heart disease ... I forget which .. maybe both(?) as well as some birth defects.

Try different brands, try LED bulbs, and try blending CFLs with incandescent or halogens.
At the high end of cost, HID lighting is expensive but efficient.

Real helpful people.
LEDS are most energy saving but cost too much still. Ya wanta save enviro or go broke trying.
I hate to name stores but I bought a 6 or 8 pack from lowes a while back and had no complaints from self or others about light quality. They come in a sky? blue package. costs about 10 bucks. Try em you should like them.
Said store feel free to send me a high dollar gift card for mentioning your name.

I'd suggest trying a different brand of CFBs. some of them are very good quality--you can't tell the difference except for that little delay when you turn them on.
